The Warden charged through the light of its rebuilt tether.
Arin met it one-handed. Her injured shoulder stayed close to her body while the other arm drove the cracked shield into Bulwark Stance. The guardian's first strike split the Stalker-hide brace. The second would destroy the center.
Mike did not give it a second.
Stormstep carried him across the Warden's front. He struck the damaged chest with Stormstrike and sent lightning into the thin tether growing through its spine. The guardian twisted toward him, exposing the arm Arin needed.
She trapped the wooden wrist between shield and body, planted both boots, and used the Warden's turn to pull it off balance.
“Opening!”
Vex vanished through Shade Slip. He reappeared against the Warden's back, one dagger driven under the bark beside Mike's electrical burn. The wound opened before the guardian could harden it.
Vex broke the first Rootrot ampoule inside.
Pale fluid entered the living tether. The graft convulsed, growing in three directions and closing none of them. Its remembered form had become inaccessible.
The Warden reacted before the Heartcore did. Its outer bark contracted around Vex's forearm, trying to seal the intruder inside the wound. Vex released one dagger, flattened his hand, and let Shade Slip pull him through the narrow darkness beneath an armor plate. He emerged on the terrace without the blade.
The guardian tore at the poisoned graft. Arin kept its wrist pinned, but roots rose behind her and wrapped around both calves. Their pull threatened to separate her stance from the shield she used as leverage.
Lumi crossed the floor in a blue streak. Her first discharge stunned the nearest root. Mike's Mana-fed Chaotic Storm Pulse followed at minimum radius, traveling through the wet fibers around Arin's boots and forcing them open. He ended the skill before it reached the poisoned tether.
His mana fell another visible step. The cost bought Arin freedom and preserved the tether, which made it worthwhile. Spending the same amount merely to injure the Warden would have fed the Heartcore another easy repair.
Vex retrieved his dagger from the wound while the bark remained confused. Pale residue coated the blade, already losing potency in open air. “Rootrot placed. One ampoule left with Marina.”
“Save it for the body after the core breaks,” Mike said.
Marina pressed both hands to the floor. “Now it wants repair.”
She made the wound cry out through the roots. The Heartcore answered immediately. Golden-green sap poured down the feeding roots, crossed the Warden, and entered the poisoned tether in an attempt to restore it.
The line blazed from the guardian's spine to the hanging core.
Mike fastened Marina's root brace around his left forearm, joined its trailing growth to the terrace, and seized the tether with his right hand.
Pain arrived as Verdant energy tried to grow his flesh into shapes meant for wood. The root brace bled part of that foreign force into the floor. Class-grown Endurance kept his muscles from locking while Arcane Control refined the Stormstep he called in answer.
The path was open.
“Heart,” he said.
Arin heard the decision. She forced the Warden's arm lower. “Go.”
Mike ran up the guardian.
His first step landed on the tilted shield. Arin drove upward as Stormstep activated, launching him to the Warden's shoulder. The creature reached with its free hand. Lumi arrived through Thunderstep Stage I and struck the wrist, her resonance telling Mike the talons had missed before he looked back.
He stepped from shoulder to the exposed tether.
Stormstep turned the living cable into a vertical road. Mike climbed in two bursts, boots touching bark only long enough to establish the next direction. The Heartcore swelled above him, each chamber large enough to crush a house.
The dungeon recognized what he intended.
Every root in the chamber moved.
Two feeding roots released smaller branches that struck at his hands and feet. Mike let the first pass beneath a Stormstep and caught the second against his forearm. Bark tore cloth and skin but gave him a firm contact point. He drove a small current through it, forcing the branch to recoil without spending a full attack.
Below, the pods produced a different defense from the creatures they had fought before. Thin bodies unfolded with wing-like membranes stretched between root limbs. They did not fly. They climbed the hanging tethers, placing themselves above Arin and Marina before dropping resin strands toward the party.
Vex saw the purpose. “They are cutting the retreat route.”
He used Shade Slip beneath a falling strand, caught one climber by the leg, and pulled it from the root. The creature struck the terrace. Arin crushed it under the heel she still used to pin the Warden's wrist.
Three more descended around Marina. She could release the false cry for healing and defend herself, but doing so would close Mike's path to the heart. Instead, she raised the living lattice beneath her into a low barrier. Resin stuck to the growth and hardened before reaching her body.
The Warden's free hand came down toward her.
Arin could not intercept without releasing the pinned wrist. Lumi called the threat through the bond as a spike of directional alarm. Mike looked down from the tether and sent Stormstrike through the same living cable he climbed. Lightning traveled into the poisoned graft, crossed the Warden's damaged chest, and burst from the descending arm.
The talons missed Marina by a meter.
The remote use cost more mana than a direct strike because the tether resisted him at every junction. It also proved the party remained connected through the mechanism. Mike did not have to abandon the climb whenever the Warden threatened someone below; the dungeon had provided the route for his answer.
“Continue,” Marina shouted. Resin cracked across her living barrier. “I have the floor.”
Arin shifted her grip to the Warden's elbow and used its failed strike to pull the whole upper body sideways. Vex took the angle and cut through the tendons controlling its free shoulder. Lumi raced up that arm, turning each small discharge into a disruption that kept the guardian from resetting its posture.
The Heartcore accelerated.
Its next beat arrived early. Golden light slammed through the feeding roots and tried to flush the Rootrot from the wounded tether. The suppressor spread instead, carried deeper by the very restoration meant to defeat it. Pale branching marks appeared across the Warden's back.
Marina's plan had forced the authority to strengthen the path Mike needed.
He climbed faster. Stormstep fired once, then again, each use measured against Mana now below one fifth. He kept enough for the contact strike. No amount of speed mattered if he arrived unable to act.
Feeding roots whipped toward him. Pods opened along the outer terraces. The Warden stopped trying to free its arm and pulled against its own spine, willing to tear out the poisoned tether before he reached the core.
The party made the climb possible.
Arin abandoned the damaged shield. She locked both arms around the Warden's wrist and drove Radiant Edge through the joint, pinning hand to terrace in a pillar of white-gold light. Vex cut the root beginning to peel away from the guardian's back. Marina kept the wound's false plea alive while Rootbind trapped the first two hatchlings. Lumi raced along a parallel feeding root, striking every smaller tendril that turned toward Mike.
He reached the final span beneath the Heartcore.
The tether entered a knot of crystallized sap protected by three overlapping root plates. Lightning could reach the core through them, but the Verdant force flowing in the opposite direction would carry most of the damage back into the Warden.
Mike needed to make the attack choose.
His Mana had fallen near empty. He formed Stormstrike anyway, compressing ordinary blue-white current around his right hand until the bones shone beneath his skin. He left Chaos unused. This first attack needed to reveal the Heartcore's physical route before he risked a stronger, less predictable expression.
Stormstrike already supplied the necessary shape. The living tether supplied reach no previous target had offered.
The Heartcore beat.
Mike struck the crystallized knot.
Lightning entered the tether. Verdant power tried to carry it downward, branch it into the feeding roots, and scatter it through the pods. Stormstrike's target remained the heart. Arcane Control drove the skill's shaped current against the intended flow.
The overlapping plates exploded. Stormstrike crossed into the Heartcore and burned a blue-white line through its nearest chamber.
The whole dungeon recoiled.
The response came through every surface at once. Verdant light erupted from the core, hit Mike at contact range, and traveled down the tether into the party. His root brace flared bright green. The instant black reached its edge, Mike obeyed the cutoff: he ended Stormstrike, opened his right hand, and released the tether. The brace tore free after bleeding the first surge into the floor.
Mike fell.
He caught the lip of a lower structural plate with one arm, swung beneath the Heartcore, and drove his boots against the same inert shelf. Below him, the Warden convulsed. Its free talons tore ridges across the terrace. Arin lost her grip and rolled beneath the discarded shield as a feeding root crashed where she had stood.
Marina's false plea ended. The Heartcore sealed the damaged tether and turned all remaining power inward.
The blue-white line Mike had made began to close.
“It is repairing the core!” Marina shouted. “The Warden has stopped healing. This is our window.”
Vex drove both daggers into the guardian's exposed chest. Arin recovered her sword and cut Radiant Edge through the knee Mike had damaged earlier. Lumi discharged into the same joint. The Warden sagged, but it remained alive and still shielded the heart through the feeding roots.
The guardian tried to rebuild without the Heartcore. It drove damaged fingers into the terrace and pulled local roots into its chest, replacing poisoned tissue with new material taken from the room. The graft lacked the precision of core-guided restoration, but it began closing around Vex's daggers.
“It has an independent repair mode,” he called. “Ugly, slow, and currently eating my knives.”
Arin cut one of the incoming roots. Lumi burned another. Marina could not spare her full attention while keeping the party's living lattice intact, so she bent its last edges around the third and made it grow sideways. The Warden received a branch that connected to nothing useful.
The response proved the sequencing condition. Destroying the Heartcore would not kill its guardian automatically. It would remove perfect restoration and coordinated adds, leaving them with a wounded enemy still capable of feeding on the chamber. Both components had to fall.
Mike looked at the closing wound above his position.
The blackened brace had done its work and failed. Mike flexed his hand. The discharge had stopped; his fingers and thoughts still answered him. Without the brace, a second contact meant trusting Marina to grow another way down before the heart closed.
He reported what only his private interface showed.
“Mana at nine percent. Channels strained, current stable. I can make one more contact attack.”
Marina found him through the tethers. “The core is feeding itself now. A second hit before the wound closes can break its internal cycle. After that, you have no safe route down.”
She gave him the cost and the opportunity in the same breath.
“Then build the route,” Mike said.
Marina did not ask him to abandon the heart. She ripped her staff from the floor and redirected Rootbind into the hanging feeding root closest to the wall. Living fibers grew across it in a descending spiral, creating holds where smooth bark had offered none. At every third turn, she joined the spiral to thick structural roots buried in the wall, giving the Heartcore's backlash several places to bleed away. It was cruder than the brace, but it did not depend on the contact that had failed.
The act consumed the power she had protected for a final control cast. Green light around her hands dimmed. She remained upright by leaning on the staff rather than hiding what the expenditure cost.
“My mana is below ten percent,” she said. “The route and one emergency Restoration are all I can guarantee.”
Arin rolled her damaged shoulder and checked the Warden. “Shield is gone. Sword and stance remain.”
Vex pulled one dagger free before the graft swallowed it. “One blade, one ampoule with Marina, and enough shadow for a few short steps.”
The party had reached the edge the dungeon was built to create. The difference was that every person knew the remaining resources and the job those resources would perform.
“Return on the eastern feeding root,” she said. “The grip lasts twenty seconds after I release it. Arin will receive you at the bottom.”
“Vex,” Arin called, “give me the Warden's attention.”
He laughed once from beneath the guardian. “I have spent my entire life cultivating irritating qualities.”
Shade Slip placed him on its wounded shoulder. He cut across the emerald eye set inside the crown lattice and withdrew along its back. The Warden followed him, turning away from the feeding root where Arin moved into position.
Mike climbed closer to the Heartcore wound.
The chambers around it contracted. Crystallized sap flowed into the blue-white line. He could see the structure now: an outer wall, a pulsing reservoir, and deeper channels where the dungeon's remembered pattern circulated. The first Stormstrike had pierced the wall. The second needed to reach the pattern.
His mana would not carry a larger attack.
Mike spent the remainder on the one task it could still perform. He sent an ordinary thread of lightning down the eastern feeding root, following Marina's temporary holds until blue-white light reached the wall. If a Chaos-fueled strike split his sight again, that signal would mark the physical way home.
[Mana: 0]
The Heartcore's wound continued to close.
Mike invoked Stormstrike again. The skill assembled its own pattern around his fist and fixed its target on the remembered structure inside the core. No Mana answered it.
Mike fed the activation with his innate Chaos instead.
Black-violet light entered the blue-white current. Stormstrike became stronger and less willing to accept a single expression. What Mike still lacked was a safe way for his body to pay for it.
The Chaos-fueled activation answered with too many possible currents.
Mike's sight divided around the Heartcore. In one path, Stormstrike rebounded through the feeding root and stopped his heart. In another, the attack scattered into the pods and woke everything the Nursery's fall had left dormant. A third current entered the reservoir but dispersed before breaking the remembered pattern.
Those possibilities were not prophecies. They were variable expressions of one skill refusing the single outcome Verdant law imposed. Mike's task remained the same as every experiment that had brought him here: choose the useful expression without surrendering the target.
His fist touched the same physical wound. Stormstrike kept its own target inward. Lumi's resonance identified the real feeding root beneath his boots, and Marina's growth marked the way home. Mike committed to the expression that struck the heart instead of the roots below.
Pain crossed his chest. Black-violet light ran beneath the blue along his arm. The System issued one warning, then another.
[Chaos-Fueled Activation Initiated]
[Raw Chaos Instability: Severe]
His hand still obeyed, though the striking arm burned to the shoulder. He told the party exactly what had changed.
“Mana zero. Channel load critical. Target remains locked.”
“Strike and return,” Marina answered. “No third attempt.”
The Heartcore's wound narrowed to the width of his shoulders.
Below, the Warden tore one leg free of Arin's radiant cut and began lifting its body toward the tether. They had seconds before its reach turned Mike's position into a trap.
He spent those seconds on the only attack that could change the fight.
Mike drove Stormstrike into it.
Stormstrike entered the core's remembered pattern. Its Chaos-fueled expression made every repair route disagree about what shape belonged there. The reservoir contracted around mutually exclusive answers.
A fracture crossed the nearest chamber.
Then the trained rhythm protecting Mike's channels broke.
The improvised backlash tore through him. With no Mana and no formal Health-payment method, raw Chaos forced the activation through living tissue already full of lightning and Verdant force.
His private interface flashed through the storm.
[Mana: 0]
[Stable Channel Tolerance Exceeded]
[Backlash-Driven Health Loss Registered]
The finite Chaos charge already delivered by Stormstrike spread through the target the skill had selected.
The Heartcore cracked from reservoir to outer wall. Every pod in the chamber froze between one state and the next. The Warden arched beneath it, feeding roots drawn taut through its spine.
Mike's body lost the distinction between falling and being pulled. His hand tore free of the core. The eastern feeding root waited below, covered in Marina's temporary holds, but three versions of it occupied his sight and only one carried weight.
Lumi's resonance struck through the noise.
The real route answered with lightning.
Mike caught it as the Heartcore began to split above him.
