The Heartcore split while Mike hung from one of the roots that had fed it.
Crystallized sap broke along the path of his Stormstrike. Golden-green light escaped through the fracture in sheets, met the finite Chaos charge already delivered by the attack, and divided into a hundred incompatible colors. The four chambers tried to contract around their remembered pattern. Each chose a different shape.
The core tore itself apart.
Fragments of living crystal rose instead of falling. Some dissolved into green motes before reaching the ceiling. Others struck the feeding roots and drove ruin back through the Maw's living body. The heartbeat that had followed the party from the dungeon entrance missed once, attempted a second beat, and stopped.
Every pod in the chamber collapsed.
Half-grown creatures withered inside their shells. The winged bodies cutting the retreat route dropped from the tethers. Roots across the terraces lost their coordinated movement and sagged under their own weight.
The failure propagated beyond sight. Mike felt doors opening along the route they had taken, spore vents closing, and maze walls releasing shapes the Heartcore had forced them to maintain. The Verdant Maw was ceasing to operate as one organism. Its remaining life had become local life again: roots responding to water, fungi consuming dead matter, creatures surviving or dying without a central command.
Neutralizing the core had not sterilized the dungeon. It had ended the authority that made every living system inside serve the same lethal purpose. Whatever grew here afterward would inherit the damage and the freed space.
The Warden remained standing.
Its emerald lights went wild when the core disappeared. Supply lines ripped free from its back, but local roots continued crawling into the wounds, feeding raw structure without the heart's precision. The guardian had become slower, damaged, and independent enough to keep killing them.
One clear condition had been met. The second had not.
Mike's private interface confirmed it.
[Verdant Heartcore Neutralized]
[Dungeon Authority Remains Active Through Heartgrove Warden]
Defeat the Warden before it establishes a replacement core.
Below the notice, his resources were worse.
[Mana: 0]
[Stable Channel Tolerance: Exceeded]
[Unstructured Health-Payment Pathway: Available]
The eastern supply root shook beneath him. Marina's temporary holds began to wither now that the core no longer fed the chamber.
“Mike, down!” Arin shouted.
He descended by falling from one living grip to the next. Three conflicting images of the root occupied his sight, aftereffects from Chaos rather than physical branches. Lumi's resonance marked the real one each time. A spark in the bond meant weight. Silence meant an option his body could not touch.
The final hold dissolved early.
Mike dropped four meters. Marina grew a cradle of roots beneath him, but her depleted mana produced a thin structure that broke on impact. It stole enough speed to keep his spine intact. He hit the terrace on one shoulder, rolled, and stopped beside Arin's discarded shield.
Pain restored a single version of the world.
Marina reached him and put a hand against his chest. Her last green light searched for trauma. It closed a shallow split along his shoulder and slowed bleeding where the Heartcore's backlash had opened vessels beneath the skin. When the spell touched the channel damage left by overdriven Chaos, it slid away without changing it.
“I can stabilize the torn tissue,” she said. “I cannot rebuild the pathways scorched by the backlash from those Chaos-fueled activations while your class is still adapting to what you forced through it.”
“Can I move?”
“Yes. That is a diagnosis, not approval.” She looked over his shoulder at the Warden, already dragging itself free of Arin and Vex. “If you use raw Chaos instead of Mana again, the backlash may tear Health directly from you. We do not know how much.”
Mike pushed himself upright. “Then I test once and report.”
Marina handed Vex the second Rootrot ampoule instead of arguing. “Use this inside the chest when Arin opens it. The core cannot purge the suppressor now.”
Fear had become the next tool.
Marina used three breaths to assess the formation aloud. Arin's shield arm could no longer absorb a heavy impact, but her legs and sword remained stable. Vex's healed side had reopened during repeated Shade Slips; he could move in short bursts and would bleed dangerously if he twisted through another long transit. Lumi's resonance ran hot without losing cohesion. Mike carried the greatest uncertainty because they did not yet know what another Chaos-fueled activation would take from his body.
“We treat this as a new phase,” Marina said. “The old core mechanics are gone. Do not assume old timings, and do not spend on habits.”
Arin shifted her sword to protect Marina's right. “I establish the front without the shield. Vex exploits only openings that already exist. Mike tests one activation. Lumi watches his resonance and the Warden's free hand.”
Nobody asked whether they should continue. The regraft warning made withdrawal another way to face the same authority later, after it had rebuilt around everything it learned. They defined how to win with what remained.
The Warden struck the terrace with both hands. Local roots rose in an uneven wave, no longer guided well enough to form spears but strong enough to break ankles and separate the party. Arin had lost the shield that made her line easy to understand. She built a new one with position.
She stepped between the guardian and Marina, sword held in both hands despite the injured shoulder. Radiant Edge burned along the blade.
“Left knee is gone,” she said. “Right arm cannot close fully. We take the chest before it roots deeper.”
Vex circled with one dagger. “My other blade is still inside it. I would like that back.”
Lumi moved to Mike's right, tails spread, every arc in her fur echoing the unstable current under his skin.
The Warden charged.
Its gait had lost symmetry. The damaged left leg landed late, forcing the right shoulder to dip before every third step. Mike's Perception turned that flaw into timing.
“Third step,” he called. “Arin, outside. Vex, chest after the turn.”
Mike counted the Warden through the broken root field. On one, its sound leg took the full weight. On two, Arin lowered her center of mass without a shield. The damaged leg landed late on three, and the guardian's shoulder dipped exactly where Mike expected.
She stepped outside the damaged leg and cut Radiant Edge through the back of the knee. The Warden collapsed on that side. Its right hand reached for her, but Lumi struck the incomplete fingers and locked them open.
Mike used Stormstrike.
Stormstrike supplied its established form and fixed the Warden's right elbow as its target. With no Mana left, Mike fueled the skill with raw innate Chaos. He had no Conduit to formalize the exchange; backlash ripped through his damaged channels and tore Health from him before impact.
Lightning erupted around his fist with a black-violet edge. The loss hollowed him before impact, a clean subtraction beneath every existing wound.
[Raw Chaos Backlash Registered]
[Chaos-Fueled Stormstrike]
Health Lost: 6% maximum.
Mana: 0.
His fist struck the Warden's right elbow. Bark and root-muscle burst outward. The joint failed, and the reaching arm hit the terrace without catching Arin.
Mike staggered after the attack. The Health loss did more than create weakness; it removed the body's ability to compensate for every injury already present. His bruised ribs sharpened. The shoulder he had landed on began shaking. Blood returned to his mouth.
“Six percent,” he said. “Mana unchanged. The backlash struck cleanly, and the channel remains unstable.”
Marina heard the tactical value and the limit. “One more attack at that cost puts you inside a critical margin. Everything between now and the finish is physical.”
“Then we make one more enough.”
The payment route had created a tactical possibility rather than free power. Six percent of maximum Health exceeded the visible cost of a typical Stormstrike because the unstructured route lacked the efficiency a stable skill could provide. A stronger activation might cost more, and the existing injuries meant percentage loss translated into immediate functional collapse.
Mike fixed a strict rule: no more raw-Chaos movement, no pulse, no attack spent on an add or outer plate. The next backlash belonged to an activation against the replacement core or it did not happen.
Marina heard the decision and reinforced it. “I will call the target when the core is exposed. If you lose the line, you stop even if the skill is formed. We can create another opening more easily than another body.”
“Understood.”
The Warden tested that discipline almost at once. A loose root whipped toward Lumi, fast enough that Stormstrike would have ended it. Mike moved physically instead, caught Lumi around the middle, and let the root rake his back while he rolled. The impact cost pain and a shallow wound. It preserved the only activation that could finish the fight.
Lumi emerged from his arms furious rather than grateful. She ran along the retreating root and discharged into the Warden's shoulder, converting the rescue into damage without asking him to spend more.
The Warden tore its ruined elbow away and drove the stump into the terrace. Roots climbed the arm, replacing the lost section with a crude mass. It was building from whatever remained, sacrificing speed for material.
Vex entered through Shade Slip before the graft hardened. He appeared against the exposed chest and drove his single dagger through the pale Rootrot scars left by the first ampoule. The second shattered under his palm.
Suppressor spread across the local grafts. Roots entering the Warden lost their remembered shape, swelling into knots that blocked further material instead of rebuilding armor. Vex twisted the dagger and found his missing blade trapped deeper inside the chest.
“Both knives accounted for,” he said. “Extraction may require the corpse to cooperate.”
The Warden tried to crush him against its body. Arin struck the damaged knee again, forcing the torso to tilt. Vex used the changing shadow beneath the crown lattice and Shade Slipped to the ground before the bark closed.
The movement cost him. He landed hard enough to wrench the Stalker bite in his side and nearly fell. Marina caught his belt with a root, then released it immediately so the support did not become a restraint.
“No more long steps,” she said. “Your side has reopened.”
Vex pressed one hand against the blood. “I can still throw.”
“Then save it for the opening Mike needs.”
The party fought without abundant Mana. Arin used steel and stance, cutting every root the Warden drove into the terrace. Marina redirected loose growth rather than creating new structures. Vex threw pieces of crystallized core to draw the guardian's damaged senses away from its true targets. Lumi attacked joints already weakened instead of spending Thunderstep on distance.
Mike used the body his levels had built.
He ducked beneath the Warden's crude new arm, drove a normal punch into a split Vex had created, and ripped loose a strip of bark with both hands. No lightning answered. Strength and momentum remained resources even when mana did not.
The guardian adapted by rooting its legs into the terrace.
Thick supports plunged downward. Its body stopped moving, and the whole central floor became its foundation. Local material surged up through those supports toward the poisoned chest, too much for Rootrot to confuse indefinitely.
“Replacement core,” Marina said.
Inside the opened torso, green light gathered around a knot of crystallized sap. The Warden was condensing the remaining dungeon authority into itself. If the knot stabilized, the Heartgrove would have a heart again.
The System gave Mike the same conclusion.
[Regraft in Progress]
Estimated Stabilization: 41 seconds.
The countdown turned every movement into a transaction. At thirty-six seconds, the crystallized knot had acquired an outer shell. At thirty-two, green lines began connecting it to the Warden's remaining arm. At twenty-nine, the local roots stopped entering randomly and started obeying the new center.
Marina tracked those changes without opening Mike's pane. “The graft is already improving its control. Once the arm connection completes, it can defend the core directly.”
Arin studied the two structural supports. “Then we do not wait for the perfect opening. Break the foundation before twenty.”
Vex rolled his remaining dagger into a throwing grip. “Mark my support.”
Mike pointed to the left anchor, where Rootrot had made one band of bark paler than the rest. “That joint. Marina can pull through your blade after it lands.”
“We end it before forty,” he said.
Arin examined the rooted body. “It cannot turn, but the chest is closing. I can open the front if someone breaks the right support.”
“I have the support.”
“You have one attack left.”
“The support gets the setup. The core gets the attack.”
Mike ran along the terrace as the Warden raised its remaining hand. He stayed outside the fixed arc until the last instant, then reproduced Stormstep's footwork without invoking the skill. No lightning assisted him, but the physical pattern remained fast enough to carry him past the talons.
He hit the right support shoulder-first.
It did not break.
Arin understood the attempt. She crossed behind him and drove Radiant Edge into the line where support entered the floor. Her remaining mana flared through the sword, burning away the living bond rather than trying to cut the full root.
Lumi struck the same point through Thunderstep Stage I. Lightning detonated inside Arin's radiant cut.
The support split.
The Warden tilted. Its fixed stance turned into a lever pulling against the remaining anchors. Vex threw his recovered dagger from the chest wound. The blade entered the opposite support at the joint Marina had marked.
Marina closed Rootbind around the hilt and pulled.
The second support tore free.
Arin charged the falling guardian. She put her full body behind the sword and drove Radiant Edge upward through the poisoned chest. The blade separated bark plates, passed beside the forming core, and opened a path without shattering the unstable knot into the party.
“Mike!”
The Warden came down around him.
Lumi climbed Arin's back and launched. Her Thunderstep struck the crown lattice, forcing the guardian's head away from the opening. Vex Shade Slipped inside the shadow of its descending arm and used his last dagger to pin the closing chest plate.
Marina thrust both hands toward the wound.
“Verdant Lance.”
Her final offensive growth entered along Arin's cut. She did not use it as healing and did not ask the Warden's tissue to accept repair. The lance impaled the forming core and held it at the center of the opening.
Every ally had created the same line.
Mike spent it.
He placed his fist against the base of Marina's lance and activated Stormstrike once more.
Stormstrike kept the replacement core as its target. Mike drove raw innate Chaos through the skill again, and the backlash tore deeper through channels already close to failure.
[Chaos-Fueled Stormstrike]
Health Lost to Backlash: 8% maximum.
Cumulative Raw-Chaos Backlash: 14% maximum Health.
Mana: 0.
Health Status: critical.
The attack traveled through Verdant wood into the replacement core. Rootrot denied restoration. Radiant Edge prevented the chest from closing. Lumi's current left the half-formed knot shuddering. Stormstrike drove its lightning through every path the Warden might have used to survive, while Mike's Chaos made the activation refuse the single living pattern the graft tried to impose.
The core burst.
Light escaped through the Warden's seams. One emerald eye went dark, followed by the other. The remaining anchors lost tension, and the immense body collapsed sideways across the terrace.
The regraft countdown vanished at nine seconds.
Silence reached the chamber differently this time. The Heartcore's destruction had removed the dungeon's rhythm; the Warden's death removed its last intention. Roots continued settling and sap continued dripping, but nothing in the room chose the party as a target.
Mike tore his hand from the lance before the falling weight trapped it. His legs stopped obeying. Arin caught him under one arm despite her shoulder, while Marina took the other side and immediately checked whether the Health drain continued.
It did not.
“Payment stopped with the skill,” Mike said. Speaking required more effort than the words deserved. “Mana remains zero. Fourteen percent paid. No ongoing drain.”
Marina lowered him carefully against the broken shield. “Do not activate anything else.”
“That was already my favorite option.”
Vex sat beside the Warden and pulled his missing dagger free with both hands. “Guardian dead. Heart dead. Mike irritatingly alive.”
The System waited until the last root stopped trying to form a pattern.
[Growth Lock 4 Released]
[Heartgrove Warden Defeated]
[Verdant Heartcore Neutralized]
[Dungeon Clear Conditions Satisfied]
Verdant Maw — processing contribution, authority, and rewards.
Mike remained level fourteen. Arin, Marina, and Vex remained level twelve. No reward had resolved, and no new skill had formalized Health payment for a Chaos-fueled activation. What he had forced through his innate power remained raw backlash.
Golden-green light rose from the dead Warden.
It spread across the terrace, passed through every collapsed pod, and gathered around the party. The glow held no heat, but it made the exposed Chaos residue in Mike's channels lift in answer.
The Verdant Maw had stopped fighting.
Now the System had to decide what they had become by killing it.
