Chapter 57 — Heart of the Maw

The Heartgrove Warden crossed the central terrace on the first beat.

Its body did not run. Three great feeding roots tightened behind it, and the floor drove the guardian forward as if the whole dungeon had released a drawn bow. One wooden talon rose above Arin's shield.

Mike had tested the smallest useful Stormstrike before crossing the threshold, while the retreat remained open and a changed technique could still be checked against dead bark. Now the deliberate preparation met its first moving target.

Stormsense separated three stress lines inside the descending arm and showed him where layered bark transferred force around the hollow joint. He fed Stormstrike with ordinary Mana. Until he possessed a safe way to pay for Chaos-fueled attacks, the long fight ahead was reason enough not to gamble his Health on every blow. The skill supplied its own shape and target; the Arcane Control his class had grown automatically helped him drive that shaped current through the joint he had chosen. The same fixed growth had reinforced the Endurance of the muscle and bone that would have to survive the Warden's answer once he reached the heart.

None of those changes slowed the talon. They gave Mike more useful information inside the same falling instant and a body better prepared to act on it. The preparation paid immediately.

The growth created no spectacular new ability. Training converted what it offered into narrower margins against weaknesses the dungeon had already demonstrated. That was progression he could trust because the next attack arrived before anticipation could flatter it.

“Left edge,” he called.

Arin shifted her cracked shield a handspan and invoked Bulwark Stance. The talon hit at an angle instead of squarely. Light ran through her bracer and across the shield brace while the impact drove both boots into the root floor. She yielded half a pace and held.

Mike entered on the side she had opened.

Stormstrike wrapped his fist. He drove it beneath the Warden's arm, where sap-bright fibers converged around the joint. The skill held to the chosen target while lightning crossed wet wood and burst from two seams along its back.

The Warden staggered.

The Heartcore beat again.

Golden-green sap descended through the feeding roots and flooded the wound. Bark drew together. Severed fibers found their previous arrangement, and the electrical burn faded beneath fresh growth.

“It restored everything,” Arin said.

“It restored the pattern it remembers,” Marina answered from behind them. “Make the pattern harder to find.”

Mike tested the limit with a second Stormstrike before the repair completed. He hit beside the first wound rather than inside it, creating two damaged structures that demanded different solutions. The Heartcore split the sap pouring into the injury. One flow rebuilt bark, while the other reconnected the burned fibers beneath it. The outer armor returned perfectly; the damaged limb recovered with a slight delay.

“It prioritizes function before protection,” he said.

Arin stepped inside the Warden's next swing and cut Radiant Edge across the newly restored bark. “Then protection becomes the permanent wound.”

Her light burned through the cosmetic repair while Mike struck the still-lagging channel underneath. The Warden lost control of one hand. Its talons closed in the wrong order, scraping past Arin's shield instead of seizing the rim.

The exchange lasted less than two seconds. It proved the heart could restore function or hide a wound beneath fresh bark, but not answer every kind of harm at once.

Vex vanished through Shade Slip. He reappeared at the Warden's back and drove both daggers into the scorched seams Mike had exposed. Rather than deepen one cut, he crossed the blades and separated three different fiber bundles before withdrawing.

The next restoration pulse reached all three wounds at once. Two closed. The third rejoined incorrectly and left a dark ridge beneath the bark.

“There,” Mike said. “It has limited precision.”

The Warden answered by touching the floor.

Pods along the outer terrace split. Four plant-beasts emerged with six low limbs, bark-plated backs, and mouths built from concentric wooden teeth. They did not charge randomly. Two moved toward Marina, one cut off Vex's retreat, and the last waited between Mike and the Heartcore.

“They share the heart's pulse,” Marina said. “Their roots join beneath us.”

She struck the floor with her staff. Rootbind rose beneath the two targeting her, trapping diagonal pairs of legs and forcing both bodies sideways. Arin broke from the Warden long enough to hit the nearer creature with Shield Bash. It crashed into its companion, teeth tearing bark from the wrong target.

Lumi took the third.

Thunderstep Stage I carried her beneath its body. She discharged through the root connecting it to the floor, interrupting the current that coordinated its limbs. Vex emerged from the creature's shadow and severed the softened neck.

Mike faced the fourth because its position was an invitation. It guarded the most direct line to the Heartcore and kept its body slightly low, ready to intercept Stormstep.

He went higher.

One foot struck the Warden's extended arm. Stormstep turned that contact into a burst over the plant-beast. Mike rotated in the air and brought Stormstrike down on its spine. The attack crushed the central plate and sent lightning through all six legs, pinning it to the terrace.

The Warden caught him before he landed.

Wooden fingers closed around his ribs. The guardian turned and threw him across the chamber. Mike crossed ten meters of green haze, struck a feeding root, and slid hard enough to skin both palms.

His class-grown Endurance kept the impact from taking his breath completely. It did not make him immune to being thrown by something three times his height.

Marina grew a pale conduit flower beside him. The living structure connected to his torn palms and bruised side, carrying Restoration through a stable external route rather than forcing her to stand in the Warden's reach.

“Verdant Conduit,” she said. “Five seconds, then it withers. You are functional, not repaired.”

Warmth closed the shallow damage and steadied his ribs. Mike pushed upright before the flower dimmed. “Five seconds is generous.”

“Spend them intelligently.”

The Heartcore pulsed. Stormsense followed its living rhythm: healing sap descended through the three great roots, while a thinner tether in the Warden's chest carried the guardian's wounds back to the heart. The same pulse reached every surviving spawn. The living authority could pour itself into repair or listen through that tether, but not do both at full strength.

“Strike after it pours healing into the Warden,” he said. “The tether lies bare a fraction later.”

Arin intercepted another talon strike. “Give me the count.”

Mike watched the Heartcore swell.

“One. Heart.” Golden light descended. “Two. Sap.” The Warden's bark tightened. “Three. Tether open—now.”

Arin drove Shield Bash into its chest. The cracked shield complained, but the hit opened the imperfect repair Vex had created. Mike's Stormstrike followed. Vex used Shade Slip to place both daggers inside the same split before the guardian could turn.

The three attacks met inside the exposed tether.

Light inside the Warden flickered. The Heartcore's next beat arrived late.

Marina thrust her staff toward the open chest. “Verdant Lance.”

A spear of hardened living wood erupted beneath the Warden and entered the damaged tether. This was attack magic, Growth forced into a shape that denied restoration. The lance branched inside the wound, making the heart's answering sap feed dead ends.

The Warden tore itself free, leaving pieces of its chest around the spear.

The Heartcore overpaid to restore the loss. Golden-green sap flooded down all three feeding roots at once, bright enough to cast hard shadows across the terrace. The Warden's chest reformed, but one living tether became visible beneath the strain, swollen with light from ceiling to spine.

“That is what we need,” Marina said. “Make it draw like that again.”

The outer pods opened in answer.

Six new creatures hit the floor. Two were the low six-legged Ravagers. Three resembled unfinished Stalkers. The last remained attached to its pod by a thick cord and exhaled a cloud of glittering spores toward Arin.

The creatures occupied different jobs. Ravagers struck the fixed front, Stalkers pursued anyone who moved around it, and the attached spore body disrupted communication. The dungeon had assembled a formation from everything it learned in the outer locks.

That also meant the party had already practiced every answer.

Mike recognized the combined attack. The Warden would hold them in place, adds would divide their attention, and spores would make the formation unreliable.

“Lumi, the pod cord. Vex, right side with her. Marina, bind us to what is real without spending the cleanse. Arin stays on the Warden.”

He used Chaotic Storm Pulse.

Class-grown Arcane Control and the geometry he had rehearsed changed the release. Instead of an indiscriminate ring, the Mana-fed pulse left him in four dense arcs aligned with active root connections. It struck the creatures through the floor, interrupted their first synchronized step, and avoided the Heartcore's feeding roots.

The cost still bit a large section from his mana.

One Ravager resisted by lifting three legs at the moment of impact, breaking part of its contact with the floor. Mike noticed the adaptation and did not repeat the same release. He Stormstepped beside it, caught an elevated limb, and drove Stormstrike through the joint while its weight remained divided. Arin's shield turned the body over. Marina grew a short Verdant Lance into the exposed underside, spending only the power the opening required.

The remaining Ravager forced Arin backward with two rapid impacts. Vex left the Stalkers he had drawn long enough to cut one rear tendon, then Shade Slipped back before they could close around him. Lumi chased his route in reverse, striking the second Stalker's ankle and making both predators collide at the edge of Marina's living lattice.

Marina closed the lattice around their legs without invoking another Rootbind. The growth tightened around its trapped prey. Mike ended one Stalker with Stormstrike, then kicked the second back into the roots before it could tear free.

Every decision spared a different kind of strength. Mike spent movement and close power to protect Mana. Marina turned growth already under her authority instead of creating more. Vex accepted a longer route to keep Rootrot sealed for the tether. Arin took controlled impacts so nobody else paid for them in blood or healing.

Arin remained beneath the Warden, shield and Radiant Edge moving as one. She caught its talon, turned the limb outside her stance, and cut into the joint Mike had already burned. Radiance prevented the next repair from settling cleanly.

Vex crossed the right terrace through Shade Slip, drew the two surviving Stalkers after him, and changed direction beneath the attached pod. Lumi used his moving shadow as cover. Her Thunderstep severed the creature’s cord in a burst of lightning, stopping the spore cloud before it reached full density and dropping its wet bulk across both predators. Vex reversed through the collapse and drove both daggers into the first Stalker while Lumi emptied the rest of her charge through the second. Neither rose.

Marina spread a living lattice beneath the party's feet. Its steady pulse gave them something real to feel without spending the cleansing power she might need later. The drifting spores still created false movement at the edge of Mike's sight, but every real ally touched the same green heartbeat below.

The Warden changed tactics.

It abandoned Arin for one beat and pulled both arms apart. Roots rose across the terrace in walls rather than spears, separating each party member into a different cell. The Heartcore sent a restoration wave through the partitions. Injured adds straightened. The Warden's radiant burns began to close.

Mike refused the division.

He drove Stormstrike into the root wall between himself and Arin, then used the conductive path to carry Chaotic Storm Pulse through it. The barrier split from inside. Arin came through behind her shield, and Marina's Rootbind climbed the broken sections to prevent them from rejoining.

“Count,” Arin demanded.

Mike found the heart through the maze of green light.

“One. Two. Three—now.”

They struck together again. Shield Bash opened the chest. Stormstrike entered. Vex's knives crossed inside the wounded tether. Marina withheld Verdant Lance this time, preserving Mana and forcing the Heartcore to decide whether the lesser damage justified another full draw.

It hesitated.

Mike hit a second time before the choice completed.

The Warden's chest ruptured. Sap-bright force spilled from the severed tether and turned the roots beneath them white-green. The Heartcore emptied all three feeding roots into the wound. The swollen tether became brighter than the guardian itself.

“Exposed,” Marina called. “Do not sever it yet. We need the path open.”

The Warden understood the same weakness.

It stopped trying to restore its chest and drove one arm through its own damaged plating. Wooden talons closed around the wounded tether. With a brutal pull, it tore the compromised graft free before Vex could poison it.

The Heartcore grew another.

A thinner root descended from above and pierced the Warden's spine. The new graft took hold in one pulse, replacing the weakness they had spent Mana exposing.

“It can replace the tether while the old one remains attached to the chamber,” Mike said. The severed graft was already sinking into the floor. “Next time, Rootrot goes in before it tears free.”

Vex touched the ampoule at his belt. “I need another clean opening and three seconds inside it.”

“We will buy them,” Arin said.

Mike tracked one full heartbeat through the new tether. It was thinner than the first, which made the Warden's repair slower, but it had entered at a different point near the spine. The dungeon would keep replacing damaged grafts until the party exhausted its living mass or made the wound reject the heart.

“We change the order,” he said. “Vex does not wait for the chest to open fully. I burn the tether through the Warden. The moment its bark separates, Shade Slip puts him inside the wound and Rootrot makes the graft forget how to mend. Arin prevents the Warden from tearing it out. Marina, can you make the tether keep drawing after it is poisoned?”

Marina watched the light move beneath the floor. “For one pulse. I can make the wound cry out for healing. The Heartcore will pour sap into the poison before it understands the plea is false.”

“That gives me an active path to the core.”

“It gives you a path carrying more living force than your body should touch,” she said. Her concern arrived with the answer he needed. “Wear the root brace before contact. I will bleed any Verdant backlash into the floor. If the brace blackens, you break away even if the heart is exposed.”

Mike nodded. “Arin?”

“I pin the arm it uses to tear out the tether. If it chooses the other arm, Lumi calls it before the swing.”

Lumi's ears angled toward the Warden and she snapped once, ready.

“Then that is the next attempt,” Mike said. “We do not trade the same wounds until our Mana loses. We make the heart feed its own injury.”

The Warden slammed both hands into the terrace.

Every active root bucked. Mike left the ground through Stormstep, but Arin had no room to abandon her stance. A ridge struck beneath her shield arm and lifted her sideways. The Warden's backhand arrived before she recovered.

The blow threw her across the terrace. Her shield took the worst of it and gained a new split through the Stalker-hide brace. Arin landed on one knee with the arm hanging low.

Marina moved toward her. Two Ravagers blocked the route.

Mike descended between them.

Stormstrike broke the first creature's jaw. Mike caught the second by a forelimb, used its charge to turn the body, and hurled it into the Warden's damaged knee. The impact split its underside. Lumi discharged through the opening and stopped its heart. Vex ended the first Ravager before its jaw could regenerate.

Marina reached Arin and used Restoration directly on the shoulder. Green light reduced the dislocation and repaired the worst torn tissue without pretending the limb was fresh.

“Can you hold?” Marina asked.

Arin stood behind the fractured shield. “Can it hit?”

“Yes.”

“Then I hold.”

Mike checked his private resources during the brief space they had created. Mana had fallen below a third. Class-grown Endurance kept the strain manageable, but another pair of Chaotic Storm Pulses would empty him before the core became vulnerable. Marina's breathing revealed a similar decline. Vex favored the side bitten by the Stalker in the outer tunnel, and Arin's shield had one heavy block left before the center failed.

The Heartcore beat above them, patient and restored.

Its light traveled through the rebuilt tether with the calm certainty of an authority that had survived every previous intruder by outlasting them.

They had learned the rhythm, forced the dungeon to reveal its repair, and made it spend. The authority had answered by changing the part they intended to exploit.

Mike raised his hands as lightning returned along both arms.

“Same objective,” he said. “Different opening. This time, it does not get its tether back.”

The Warden lowered its branching crown and charged beneath the heart.
