Chapter 28 — The Guardian of the Threshold

The Guardian’s first six blades arrived on different lines.

Mike entered with forty-five percent Health, sixty-nine percent Mana, and thirty-two percent Stamina. The active Chaotic Doppelganger followed at fifty-eight percent integrity, while bilateral channel damage and the abrasion near his spine carried forward without relief.

Mike retreated across the innermost ring, caught the lowest weapon with his conductive blade, and let two more pass above his shoulder. A fourth cut forced him left. The remaining pair crossed exactly where that movement placed his ribs.

He used Stormstep before they closed.

[Mana −3%]

Lightning pulled him eight meters around the arena. Mike emerged beside the seam beneath the Guardian’s rear legs and drove his blade into it, adding an ordinary discharge to the thrust. White mineral cracked, and condensed mana spilled across the floor.

The victory lasted one heartbeat.

Every plate around the damaged seam flowed backward. Thin armor became dense crystal, the rear legs shortened to reduce the angle beneath them, and the channels in the floor redirected power away from that side. A new gap opened high on the Guardian’s forward shoulder where material had been taken to reinforce the wound.

The construct had not merely repaired itself. It had remembered the successful strike and moved its weakness elsewhere to make that answer obsolete.

Mike sent a second spark at the rear seam. Crystal flowed into place before impact and bent the bolt away, while the shoulder gap widened by the same amount. He threw an uncharged pebble through that opening; the Guardian ignored it. When lightning touched the stone in flight, armor surged toward it.

The Guardian learned the shape of power it could observe. Every lesson consumed material from another part of its body.

The Guardian turned. Two arms fused into a broad shield over the damaged seam, while the other four lengthened their weapons into hooked spears. It planted its feet and waited for Mike to repeat the approach.

“You are going to be expensive,” he said.

It charged.

Mike sent the Chaotic Doppelganger right and moved left. The duplicate carried the five-tenths lightning cycle learned in the classification chamber, its first pulse traveling from hand to foot in a pattern the Guardian had already observed. Two spears tracked it immediately.

The other pair followed Mike. He parried one hook, ducked the second, and released a narrow bolt at the vulnerable shoulder. It struck cleanly. The plate burst into pale fragments, exposing a braid of golden mana underneath.

Armor climbed toward the shoulder at once. The Guardian grew a ridge there, lowered its torso, and moved the next vulnerability to the inside of its front-left leg. Its shield divided into two smaller plates so no identical bolt could reach the same depth.

The construct tested the same principle on him.

Its next spear thrust resembled the first until the last meter. The weapon split at the hook, one point catching Mike’s blade while the other reversed beneath his guard. White mana tore across his side and reopened skin the earlier trials had only begun to close.

[Laceration: Right Flank]

Mike withdrew before the Guardian could repeat the strike. The repaired flank would not adapt the way its armor did, and the construct had shown no reason to avoid exploiting that difference.

He tried Stormstep again from a different starting point, aiming beside the Guardian’s forward shoulder instead of behind it. The lightning burst was shorter and the endpoint changed, but his body followed the same acceleration profile.

The Guardian had learned that profile. One hooked spear entered the space before Mike arrived. He twisted during emergence, preventing the point from reaching his chest, and took the shaft across his damaged shoulder hard enough to throw him onto the first ring.

Movement counted as a successful pattern when it had created the earlier hit. Repeating a skill did not merely lose offensive value; it gave the Guardian a place and moment to attack.

Mike rolled under the next blade and rose without using lightning. Stormstep remained available, but every future activation needed a different distance, vector, or interaction to prevent the construct from occupying the endpoint first.

He needed to spend each successful form once, learn where the vulnerability moved, and prevent the Guardian from deciding the entire sequence.

The front-left leg offered the next target. Mike could not reach its inner seam from his current angle without crossing four blades, so he changed the delivery surface.

He drove his conductive blade into the floor.

Lightning entered the innermost ring, divided around the arena, and returned beneath the Guardian through a channel already carrying mana toward its feet. The upsurge struck the vulnerable leg from below. Crystal exploded out of the joint, dropping the construct’s front quarter.

The floor channel blackened after carrying competing currents. Mike paid eleven percent Mana for the improvised circuit, but the result did more than damage. Armor abandoned the injured leg and thickened across the Guardian’s underside, leaving two narrow plates along its upper back almost transparent.

No second floor strike would work. The Guardian sealed its connection to the innermost ring and drove power through the three outer channels instead.

Mike recalled the Doppelganger before a spear could destroy it. Its retained pattern returned at fifty-one percent integrity, enough for one demanding position or several simple repetitions. He sent it behind the Guardian with instructions to climb rather than attack.

The duplicate obeyed literally. Violet-black hands found the ridges of newly hardened armor, and it hauled itself up the construct’s back without caring that three blades turned toward it. Mike crossed the front at the same time, using the ruined leg as a blind angle.

The Guardian chose the moving target above. Its upper plates thickened before the Doppelganger released any skill, adapting to the observable setup instead of waiting for damage. The transparent back seams shifted down the torso and opened beside the central mana braid.

Mike had spent the duplicate’s obvious attack without attacking.

He jumped onto the broken leg and cut horizontally into the new gap. Stormstrike carried Chaos-fueled lightning through the blade, separating mineral from condensed mana in a single bright line. The forced separation kicked back through his damaged channels and tore one point from his Health. The Guardian convulsed hard enough to throw both Mike and the Doppelganger across the arena.

Mike landed on his wounded side. Breath vanished, and one of the abrasion lines near his spine flared hot.

[Channel Strain Increased Through Impact]

The Guardian rebuilt while he rolled upright. Four legs became six, distributing its mass too widely for another joint collapse. The torso flattened, plates overlapping around the central braid in a moving spiral. Its arms released their spears and reshaped them into short blades suited to the distance Mike had used.

Adaptation had made it harder to wound and better at reaching him. It had also consumed material from somewhere.

Stormsense found the cost along the Guardian’s neck. The smooth column beneath its faceless head had become a hollow sheath carrying mana through only three narrow strands. A clean strike could sever them.

Mike let lightning gather along his blade in the same way he had prepared Stormstrike.

The Guardian saw the output. Neck plates flowed upward before he moved, sealing all three strands inside crystal. The weakness migrated into the lower torso, but Mike’s visible preparation had taught the construct soon enough to close his route.

He canceled the skill and lost three percent Mana to the interrupted formation.

The Guardian attacked with a pattern shaped around that hesitation. Six legs drove it forward, short blades occupying every direct retreat. Mike sent the Doppelganger between two arms and let the construct cut through its shoulder, then used the gap its body created to dive beneath the flattened torso.

He found the vulnerable plate above him and struck with the pommel instead of lightning.

The mineral cracked under physical force. No mana pattern announced the blow, but the weak angle was too narrow for a decisive cut. Mike rolled clear as the Guardian dropped its full mass onto the place he had occupied.

One foot caught his left ankle.

Bone held. Ligaments did not. Pain traveled to his knee as he tore free, leaving the ankle unstable beneath his weight.

[Mobility Impairment: Left Ankle]

The Guardian’s underside hardened against physical impact, and a pale seam opened along one rear leg. Mike shifted toward it.

Three blades folded around the approach before he committed. The offered weakness closed like an eye.

The construct could bait him now.

Mike retreated to the second floor ring and gave the Doppelganger its earlier climbing sequence. The duplicate set two hands on the Guardian's flank, then obeyed the new ending hidden inside Mike's command. Instead of climbing, it released a weak Chaotic Pulse into the hardened underside.

The attack barely scorched the mineral. Armor flowed down to answer it anyway, widening the real seam at the rear.

Mike Stormstepped onto the third ring rather than toward that opening. The Guardian rotated to intercept his familiar arrival, carrying the widened gap above a channel that still remembered Mike's earlier lightning.

He threw his blade.

The weapon entered the seam and called the buried charge upward. Two legs burst apart. The Guardian crashed against the outer ring, and Mike crossed behind its fall to tear the hilt free before reshaping armor could swallow it.

The construct abandoned legs worth breaking.

White mineral flowed inward, becoming a low central mass on a dozen narrow limbs. Six arms folded across its torso in layered shields, and weapon edges grew directly from the plates. It looked less like a warrior now than a many-legged shrine built to deny access to its god.

Stormsense still found the golden braid inside. Every adaptation drew substance through that center. Whenever the Guardian armored one wound, some other part of the shrine thinned for a heartbeat.

Mike could not outrun every movement. His attack would have to follow them.

He recalled the Doppelganger. Twenty-two percent of the manifestation remained, enough for one final task. Mike placed it on the outer ring with his cracked blade and gave it the rhythm that had survived the classification chamber: receive, turn, return.

Then he arranged five independent lines of lightning: in the floor, the air, the duplicate, Stormstep, and his own hands. Each already had its place in the attack. Raw Chaos added divergence to the prepared releases without deciding their order. One strike would make the Guardian move. The next would hunt the weakness that movement created.

The strain rose immediately.

The Guardian advanced. Its many limbs crossed the first ring, blades turning to deny every attack Mike had used. He released the lightning beneath it.

Lightning struck the central underside. Armor hardened there, and a vulnerable line opened across the right shield.

One blade reached Mike during the adaptation. He caught it against his bracer, allowed the impact to turn his forearm, and sent the weapon past his neck. The edge still opened a shallow cut beneath his jaw, but he kept all five possibilities separated.

[Health −2%]

Mike caught the returning current and threw it skyward. A bolt descended before the armor completed its movement. The right shield broke. Material raced upward to replace it, exposing a channel near the rear limbs.

Across the ring, the Doppelganger received the next surge and drove it through the cracked blade. Two limbs vanished. The Guardian adapted again, opening a seam beside the central braid.

Mike rode that opening with Stormstep.

He emerged inside the construct’s reach, injured ankle failing as he landed, and drove both hands against the seam. The direct-contact branch entered with no blade between his channels and the Guardian.

Mike kept the possible exits open. Raw Chaos varied the prepared attack's expression as lightning followed each adaptation through the body, branching wherever mineral moved to close the previous wound. One strike became a sequence the Guardian could never observe twice in the same form.

The central braid ruptured.

Power filled the construct faster than the arena could draw it away. Mike tried to route the return through his blade, the floor, and the collapsing Doppelganger. All three reached capacity.

The Guardian made one last adaptation. Every surviving plate moved inward, abandoning limbs and weapons to seal the ruptured braid. That choice opened the entire outer shell at once.

Mike changed the final release after it began, splitting the charge between the direct strike and the abandoned plates. Raw Chaos made those prepared branches diverge, and lightning leapt through every connection the construct’s own movement had opened to the overloaded core.

White current erupted across its body. The Doppelganger completed its last return pulse and dissolved, sending the stored pattern back to Mike as the cracked conductive blade fell point-first into the outer ring.

The remaining discharge struck the chamber boundary.

[Mana Reserve Critical]
[Severe Channel Overdraw Detected]

White-blue lightning spread across the walls in a branching web. The Guardian came apart beneath Mike’s hands, every plate adapting toward a threat that had already changed destination. Its core opened into a vertical threshold of light.

The trial barrier failed before the current stopped.

Mike dropped beside the dissolving construct, left ankle folded beneath him, and felt the oversized discharge leave his domain. It crossed a shared boundary he had not known was there and returned three distinct pulses through the storm pattern.

One carried immovable weight. One carried living green warmth. One vanished into shadow before Stormsense could follow.

They were feedback, not answers. Mike could not see the people beyond them, learn their choices, or call the lightning back before it reached their trials.
