The four labels entered Mike's innate Chaos as blades of white text.
Protector, Conqueror, Destabilizer, and Corrupted had entered through four separate doors. The repair protocol forced their lines together through Mike’s storm channels, searching for one category that could contain every contradiction. Nothing new had been placed inside him, yet the convergence pulled at his soul with enough force to bend his knees.
Dark filaments turned through blue-white current, forming connections that changed whenever he tried to count them. The Chaos was his; the raw current driving the classification load was not. The System flooded Mana into channels it intended to test while leaving his injuries untouched.

The four labels compressed into the protocol’s first attempted answer.

Provisional Classification: ELEMENTAL DEVIATION
Applying compatible limits.
The survival chamber translated the label into a wall of blue lightning. Twelve identical conduits rose from the stone floor, each joining an outer ring to the platform beneath Mike’s boots. The System drove current through them at a fixed interval and tried to make his Chaos answer in the same rhythm.
Mike counted four cycles before the imposed structure reached his core. Each pulse arrived six-tenths of a second after the previous one. The current entered through the conduits, converged beneath him, and left through a crown of runes overhead.
Mike cut the System's Mana out of one pulse and fed the lightning with Chaos instead.
The bolt split into a thirteenth path.
Violet light crossed the chamber at an angle the lattice had not provided. It touched two conduits, exchanged their destinations, and returned the next pulse to the System through the wrong rune. Half the wall went dark. The other half discharged through Mike.
Pain locked his shoulders and drove him onto one hand.

[Channel Abrasion Detected: Left Shoulder / Upper Spine]
The Elemental Deviation label split through the center. A replacement descended before Mike recovered his breath.
For several seconds, remnants of the rejected classification continued trying to attach themselves to his affinity. Lightning mutation settled over one branch. Unstable storm aspect caught another. Each description recognized how the power traveled while missing what the power was, like naming a city by the weather above it.
Mike used Stormsense to follow their effect. The lightning terms narrowed discharge angle and speed, but the violet branches beneath them continued changing destination. When the System attempted to extend those limits inward, Transcendent Soul offered no explanation or counter-message. It simply failed to accept a boundary that did not match Mike’s lived pattern.
The failure helped him in one way. His Chaos was not rejecting classification because all rules were impossible; lightning remained measurable wherever he used it. The false labels failed where they tried to turn one useful part into the definition of the whole.
[Provisional Classification Rejected]
Candidate structure exceeds elemental variance tolerances.
Testing: CORRUPTION.
Black light entered the twelve conduits. Wherever it passed, blue-white current dulled and the silver lines beneath it began to pit. CORRUPTION was not a moral accusation. It was the System's name for a force that damaged a pattern, taught the damage to spread, and left less behind.
The classification almost fit. Chaos had broken spells, monsters, and the Verdant Maw's living core.
Almost was dangerous when the System could make a word real.
“Give me something stable,” Mike said.
A transparent prism rose from the central rune. Six silver veins crossed its heart, each carrying the same small current back toward the floor.
[Repair Substrate Provided]
Classification test will continue.
Mike sent the smallest Chaos-fueled spark into the first vein. It burned black. The next caught the spark and held it like a blue star. A third threw the current sideways into its neighbor, where both lights weakened but continued to move. The remaining veins produced their own answers—one useless, two functional, none repeating the first wound.
Then the System sent its black current through a second prism.
Every vein decayed. Each failure darkened the next until the whole object became dead glass.
Mike looked from the ruined prism to the one still shining in several altered ways. “Dangerous is accurate. Corruption is lazy.”
[Corruption Classification Confidence Reduced]
The chamber answered by opening every conduit at once.
Blue and black lightning climbed the pillars, crossed overhead, and plunged toward Mike in a cage of opposing storms. The prism in front of him shattered. He tried to drive the gathered charge away through one hard bolt.
The bolt struck the outer wall and came back.
It entered through his right arm, crossed the fresh abrasion in his spine, and threw him to both knees. His fingers opened around nothing. The conductive blade lay beside him, close enough to see and briefly impossible to hold.

[Uncontrolled Return Current Recorded]
Mike tasted blood and watched the reflected arc finish its journey through the floor.
Every lightning strike returned somewhere. Earth, air, steel, flesh—the current did not disappear because he stopped planning after impact. He had treated the target as the end of the attack and left the returning current a path through his body.
He closed his hand around the blade.
The point entered the central rune. Mike sent ordinary lightning down his arm, through the cracked metal, and into the floor. Instead of letting the current scatter, he called it back through the nearest pillar and into the soles of his boots. A blue ring closed around him.
Mike cut off the Mana and fed the next discharge with Chaos.
The Chaos-fueled lightning tore into three branches. Mike gave the first his blade, the second the empty shell of the broken prism, and the third a long curve across the outer wall. One scorched steel. One burst harmlessly inside glass. The last returned through his legs with enough force to shake his teeth but not enough to break him.
Chaos had replaced Mana as the fuel. It had not replaced the physical world. Every branch of the lightning still needed somewhere to finish.
The white labels descended again—aberration, contaminant, uncontrolled hybrid—each one becoming a bar of light across the chamber. Mike's storm struck them, split, and returned along different lines. He caught what he could. What he could not catch opened black wounds in the floor and fresh burns beneath his bracers.
The bars multiplied until no single body could complete every path.
Mike summoned the Chaotic Doppelganger across the ring.
[Mana −10%]
The dark outline rose with his cracked-blade stance already in its hands. Mike gave it a rhythm simple enough to survive him: receive, turn, return. The first wild branch entered its chest and came back diminished from its blade. The second tore away part of its shoulder. It held the pattern anyway.
The System imposed CORRUPTION once more.
Black current flooded every open line, trying to make damage the only ending. Mike drove his blade deeper. The Doppelganger received the largest surge and began to come apart, but its returning strike kept one clear blue path alive through the dark.
Mike chose that path.
Lightning carried the black current away from the wounded floor, through an empty prism, and into the dead label overhead. The word cracked. Darkness could not reproduce through glass that no longer held it, and the remaining charge returned to Mike clean.
The storm cage went out from the center.

CORRUPTION rejected as defining alignment.
Observed Function: divergent possibility shaped through candidate intent and compatible structure.
Hazard remains significant. Moral value is not assigned.
Mike laughed once, breathless and hurting. “That took long enough.”
Mike answered with a Chaos-fueled pulse that matched neither the System’s fixed rhythm nor his heartbeat. Its lightning crossed the chamber and returned without losing the divergent paths the new fuel had opened. For a moment, Mike's channels stopped tearing at their own edges.
[Lightning Affinity: C → C+]
Usable resonance has improved through repeatable stabilization.
The reward felt like better contact rather than greater volume. Mike could sense where lightning left him, where the world would send it back, and how a Chaos-fueled discharge might diverge from the Mana-fed version. Lightning had become easier to direct. Chaos remained exactly what it was: innate, unclassified, and impossible to bind into obedience.
His final cost pane arrived without celebration.

The numbers included every failed cycle. Mike had earned the alignment by making each failure legible enough to change the next attempt, and his body carried the parts he had understood too late.
Runes rose from the floor and assembled into a doorway. The survival chamber folded inward around it, each rejected label breaking into pale dust before reaching the stabilized storm pattern. Mike called the damaged Doppelganger close rather than wasting its remaining manifestation, pulled his blade free, and crossed the threshold with it still active.
The next arena was circular and empty except for a figure at its center.
The Guardian stood twice Mike’s height, built from overlapping plates of white mineral and condensed mana. Its narrow torso rested on four articulated legs, while six arms held no weapons until their hands began studying the shape of his blade. No face interrupted the smooth armor above its shoulders.
Stormsense mapped the arena before Mike moved. Thirty meters separated them. The floor contained four shallow rings and no cover, while narrow channels carried mana from the walls toward the Guardian’s feet. Each plate in its body drew from a different channel, allowing the construct to rebuild one region without reinforcing the whole.
The obvious tactic was to find the thinnest plate and attack until it broke. The arena’s geometry made that answer available enough to be suspicious.
Mike sent the smallest possible bolt toward its left side.
The strike scorched one plate. Mana flowed there at once, hardening the damaged region into translucent crystal while the plate beside its right hip thinned. Mike repeated the same bolt to confirm the rule.
The Guardian moved the vulnerable geometry again. Its left side became thicker than before, two arms fused into a shield, and a narrow seam opened beneath the rear pair of legs.
Every repeated form taught its body where never to be vulnerable in that way again.
The threshold sealed behind Mike. The Guardian lowered six newly formed blades, each angled toward a route he had used during the alignment cycles.
Mike adjusted his grip on the cracked weapon. His self-authored lightning rhythm held for one more half-second beat.
Then the Guardian attacked.
