The first banner opened behind Aethran, and darkness shaped itself around his bones.
Mike felt the active anchor settle through the black-iron circuit beneath the floor. The other two banners remained taut and lightless, holding complete returns in reserve. There was no hidden fourth life waiting behind a clever phrase. Three anchors meant three embodiments, and the lich already occupied the first.
The System confirmed the enemy before him.
[Aethran, Crowned Lich - Level 35]
Traits: Necromancy / Soul-Binding / Gravecaller Command
Anchor state: I active / II reserve / III reserve
Threat: Extreme
Aethran lifted one hand. "Do you know what the last storm did when it reached this room?"
"Lost, apparently."
"It attacked the crown." The lich's polished skull tilted. "Power always believes the ruler is the highest point."
Mike looked at the black circuits, the three banners, and the pale throne between them. "Then power should learn to read a room."
Aethran closed his fingers.
Bone spikes erupted from the floor.
Mike stormstepped across the nearest line. Mana paid for movement while Stormsense followed the warning tremor beneath the stone. The spikes did not chase him. They rose in a sequence that narrowed the approach to the throne, forcing every safe step toward the center.
Alcoves opened around the vault.
Knights of the Crown emerged with overlapping shields. Gravecallers moved along the upper gallery, each carrying a black-iron signaling pipe. They lifted the instruments and sent clipped notes through the dome. The Knights changed formation with every call.
Aethran had rebuilt the Court's command structure around himself.
Mike fixed Thunderfall Sphere behind the first shield line and fueled it with Chaos. Health paid the activation cost through Chaotic Conduit; lightning condensed into a violent blue-white core; Elemental Drift flickered at the edge without taking control. He threw.
The detonation attacked from the direction their armor did not cover. Arcs crossed spear shafts, entered knees, and opened three bodies at once. The front rank staggered. Mike stormstepped through the gap and struck the nearest Knight with Chaos-fueled Stormstrike.
Black iron folded under his fist.
The Knight fell into the path of the next bone-spike sequence. Mike caught its shield, turned it sideways, and used the dead weight to jam two rising spikes before they could close the route behind him.
The first lives were already trying to return.
Aethran pointed toward the bodies. Necromantic threads reached from his fingers and entered the forming mist. The second bodies adapted before they stood: one gained a shield rim shaped to catch Mike's bracer, another grew knee plates, and the third abandoned its spear for a chain that could reach across Stormstep's likely landing point.
The lich was choosing which lessons mattered.
Mike refused to fight the revised line where Aethran placed it.
He ran toward the outer wall. Knights pursued. A signaling note told them to spread; another ordered the chain-bearer ahead. Mike waited until the chain snapped toward his wrist, then caught it between both bracers and pulled.
The Knight had expected resistance from a single body. It had not expected Mike to wrap the chain around a stone pillar and change the vector. The undead hit the pillar shield-first. The following line collided behind it.
Mike called a Health-paid, Chaos-fueled Skyhammer Bolt onto the chain where it crossed the pillar.
The strike entered every Knight connected to the metal. The adapted shield rim gave the current more surface to travel. The knee plates locked rigid. Mike closed on the convulsing line and finished second lives with short strikes to exposed joints.
Above, the Gravecallers changed their signal.
Mike called a second Skyhammer Bolt and paused before release. The upper gallery's black-iron rail connected directly to the banner circuits. Skyhammer Bolt's Chaos-fueled expression could drive stronger secondary effects through the connected rail and let Aethran's binding network react to power Mike supplied.
He chose a physical answer.
Mike seized a broken spear, threw it into the nearest signal pipe, and turned the note into a choking metallic shriek. The next formation command arrived distorted. Knights advanced on mismatched steps, leaving one shield high and another low.
He entered through the error.
Aethran's next spell reached him there.
A black thread touched the inside of Mike's wrist. Cold intent followed it, searching for a name, a category, anything the lich could bind. Mike's Transcendent Soul resisted classification, but resistance did not make contact harmless. The thread tightened around muscle and drew his striking hand half a pace off line.
A spear tore through the cloak beside his ribs.
The Stormwoven Jerkin stopped the point from going deep. The impact still drove breath from him and opened the stretched seam Arin had repaired.
Mike trapped the spear under his arm and pulled its owner close. "That's one."
Stormstrike fixed the Knight's face as its target. Chaos replaced Mana as fuel while Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health. His fist broke the Knight's face and carried current through the spear into two bodies behind it.
Then he turned on the binding thread.
He did not send power into it. He wrapped the line around a fallen shield handle, stepped through the loop, and made Aethran choose between holding Mike and holding twenty kilos of black iron moving in the opposite direction.
The lich released him.
Mike used the freed hand to invoke Thunderhead Descent over the throne approach. The attack drew through Chaotic Conduit. Lightning established a compact field that punished every moving Knight and every Gravecaller trying to change position above.
Health fell in steady measures. Mike crossed the field before the cost grew wasteful, using the timing between strikes to climb the pale steps.
Aethran drifted backward.
Mike had expected that. The throne was not the lich's refuge; the active banner was.
He changed direction and stormstepped toward Banner I.
Aethran reacted instantly. Bone spears rose between Mike and the cloth, while the entire remaining Knight line abandoned defense to intercept him. The response revealed more than any scan. Damage to the banner would trigger an elite wave under the dungeon rule, but the anchor could still be threatened. Aethran could not afford to let Mike touch it on his own terms.
Mike had no intention of doing so.
He used the reaction to reach the lich.
Stormstep carried him across the throne's lower step. He planted one palm against Aethran's sternum and released Chaos-fueled Stormstrike at point-blank range.
The lich's ribs opened. Its crown flashed with black sigils as necromancy tried to route lightning through the floor. Mike cut the attack before the return path settled, caught Aethran by the robes, and drove him into the pale throne.
Bone cracked against stone.
Aethran attempted another soul-binding line. Mike trapped the casting wrist beneath his bracer and struck again with the other hand. Chaotic Conduit took Health as Chaos fueled Stormstrike; lightning entered through the spine; the crown split along one engraved line.
The first embodiment came apart.
Ash streamed backward toward Banner I.
The cloth absorbed it, flashed once, and turned from black to lifeless gray. The change happened a single time. The circuit beneath that pole went cold.
Banner II opened.
Aethran reformed before it, crown restored and robes dark with new script.

The gray cloth of Banner I sagged around its pole. With the black enchantment gone, Mike could see what it had been made from: hundreds of narrow record strips sewn edge to edge. Ilyran names covered them in faded ink. Aethran had not created the anchors from nothing. He had taken the city's memorial archive, stitched lives into a royal standard, and made remembrance sustain him.
Banner II still hid its names beneath perfect black. Banner III did the same. The active circuit ran through the second pole now, while the first offered no current and no path back to life. The rule was behaving exactly as the System had described.
That certainty mattered. Mike had already seen enemies grow new traits and a city mechanism obey two masters. He needed at least one part of the battle that would not change its terms halfway through.

The second Aethran regarded Mike without amusement. "The previous storm made the same feint."
Mike touched the torn cloak and found blood beneath it. "Did you rehearse that answer for them too?"
"For longer than your species has remembered its own dead."
"Ilyra remembered. You had to nail your name over theirs."
The crown's glow sharpened. Mike had found something the lich still hated, and Aethran's answer came through the room rather than his mouth. He spread both hands, and every corpse in the Throne Vault moved toward the center.
Knights, Gravecallers, shields, spears, and strips of bone dragged across the floor. Necromantic thread stitched them together around a core made from three overlapping breastplates. The resulting body rose high enough to look down on the throne. It had no face, only a cluster of helms around a dark cavity. Six arms ended in weapons taken from the fallen.
[Stitched Crown Engine - Level 34]
Dungeon Law eligible: Second Life
The Engine charged.
Mike stormstepped off the steps as a shield-arm shattered the place where he had stood. A second limb swept low. He jumped, but a chain-hand changed direction and caught his damaged boot.
The Engine pulled.
Mike hit the floor, rolled before a spear-arm drove down, and felt the point tear a shallow line across his left thigh. His existing strain flared. Stamina dropped hard when he forced the leg to push again.
He drew the last stamina tonic and drank while moving.
[Stamina Tonic Used]
Remaining: 0
Effect: Regeneration increased for 180 seconds.
The tonic steadied the leg. It could not prevent the Engine from learning.
Aethran stood behind the construct and wrote commands into it with both hands. Each time Mike aimed at a joint, the Engine shifted armor from another body to cover it. Each time he tried to circle, discarded limbs crawled across the floor and rebuilt the side he approached.
The construct was not intelligent. The lich was using it as a body large enough to edit during combat.
Mike needed to separate command from material.
He ran toward the throne inlays.
The Engine followed. Its weight crossed the thin black iron set into the floor. Mike placed one bracer against the nearest strip and sent a minimal Mana current through it. Precision mattered more than force; he wanted to map the network without supplying Aethran's authority with any of his Chaos.
Stormsense returned the circuit. Banner II connected to the lich. The lich connected to the Engine through hundreds of temporary threads. All those threads crossed the throne inlays at different points.
Too many paths for a single interruption.
Mike pulled one of the remaining chain links from the salvage bundle. A matching piece had served as a brake in the gallery; this one could force the same kind of mechanical interruption. He wedged it under one inlay, lifting black iron a finger's width from the stone.
The Engine's next step completed the break.
Its weight drove the bent link down. The inlay tore loose in a long strip. Half the necromantic threads crossing it snapped.
The Engine faltered.
Mike opened Chaotic Conduit and called Thunderfall Sphere into the gap beneath its central breastplates. Chaos replaced Mana as the skill's fuel, and Health paid the cost. The sphere detonated inside the construct, lightning branching through every stolen weapon and armor plate.
Elemental Drift added a narrow edge of heat. Necromantic thread burned. Bodies lost the instructions holding them together.
The Crown Engine collapsed.
[First Death Recorded]
Cause: Internal detonation / command-network severance
Mike did not wait beside it. He ran for Aethran.
The lich snapped bone spears across the route. Mike turned one on his bracer, took another through the outer cloak, and reached striking distance before the Engine's second life assembled.
Aethran's barrier appeared as layered ribs of black light.
Mike invoked Stormstrike with Chaos. The first hit cracked the barrier. The second drove the ribs inward. The third would have reached the lich, but the Engine returned behind him.
Its new body had abandoned rigid armor. Weapons and plates floated around the core on flexible necromantic threads, leaving no compact interior for another sphere to destroy. The command network also split into redundant clusters; tearing one inlay would no longer interrupt the whole.
[Second-Life Adaptation]
Distributed Crown: separated structure / redundant command
Six floating weapons attacked from six angles.
Mike broke away from Aethran. A blade cut his upper arm. A shield struck the bruised chest. He caught a spear between both bracers and used it to block the next sword, but a chain wrapped around his ankle and tore him off balance.
The tonic kept his muscles responsive. His Health did not share that generosity.
He needed a different shape of attack.
Mike drank one mana draught.
[Mana Draught Used]
Remaining: 1
Cold clarity filled his channels. The potion restored Mana, not Health, and left the ache from repeated Health payments for Chaos-fueled attacks exactly where it was. That was useful. He needed clean movement and control while continuing to pay for attacks through Health.
Mike invoked Stormshroud with Chaos.
Lightning wrapped close around his body. The distributed weapons could avoid a point detonation; they could not strike him without entering the shroud. Every blade, chain, and shield that crossed it became a temporary conductor.
He let the Engine surround him.
Aethran issued a silent command through the raised inlays. All six weapons attacked.
Mike caught the first chain, redirected the second, and allowed a shield edge to strike his shroud. Stormshroud climbed each contact. The flexible threads tried to withdraw, but the weapons had tangled around Mike and one another.
He placed both hands on the knot and invoked Chaotic Storm Pulse. Chaotic Conduit took two Health payments: one for the Chaos-fueled shroud, one for the Chaos-fueled burst. Lightning filled every redundant cluster at the same moment. Heat flashed along the necromantic threads, while frost appeared on one edge and made the black bindings brittle.
Mike tore the construct apart from inside its own surround. The pieces hit the floor far enough from one another that no shared frame remained, and the Engine had already spent both lives. Stormshroud ended. His arms shook as he turned back toward the throne.
Aethran had used the construct as cover to repair the rib barrier and spread new binding marks across the floor. Banner II hung black behind him, active and unspent. Banner III remained still.
Mike checked his resources without taking his eyes off the lich.

The numbers gave him enough for one clean push. Aethran expected him to spend it on the barrier.
Mike attacked the room instead.
He stormstepped to the pale throne, planted both hands beneath one arm, and heaved. Strength, leverage, and the loose inlay strip combined. The ancient stone shifted a handspan.
Under it lay the civic emblem Aethran had covered: seven rivers meeting around an empty circle.
The lich's barrier flickered.
Mike sent Mana through the emblem in the same evacuation cadence that had opened the chain gallery. The old bronze network answered beneath the black iron. It did not overpower the necromancy. It moved the floor by a fraction, enough to lift three inlay intersections and break the barrier's symmetry.
Then Mike fixed the raised intersection as Skyhammer Bolt's target and opened Chaotic Conduit. Health paid as Chaos replaced Mana.
Skyhammer Bolt struck the raised intersection behind Aethran. The attack detonated through the broken geometry, chaining from inlay to crown rather than from Mike to barrier. The lich arched as lightning entered along a path he had not defended.
Mike crossed the steps and drove Stormstrike into the cracked ribs.
Aethran caught his wrist. Soul-binding closed around the bracer, searching for the identity beneath it.
Mike drove his other fist into the crown.
The black iron split.
He struck again. The lich's skull broke against Banner II's pole.
The second embodiment dissolved.
Ash entered Banner II. Its black cloth flashed and turned gray once. The circuit beneath it died.
Banner III opened.
The last Aethran formed slowly, each bone drawing itself from the final black cloth. His crown returned without the earlier polish. Cracks ran across its surface, and the names stitched into his robes now moved like bound insects.

The last banner stayed black. It would gray only when this body died. No return waited beyond it.
Mike wanted to attack before the formation completed. His right leg tried to obey and nearly folded. The tonic had ended; the thigh wound and accumulated fatigue collected their debt at once.
He drank the channel stabilizer instead of the final health draught.
[Channel Stabilizer Used]

Cool fire traveled through his arms. The ache receded from sharp to controlled, leaving every cut and bruise untouched. He had chosen the resource that let him trust his power, because the final life had begun by changing how power moved.
Aethran stepped away from Banner III.
Black lines formed beneath his feet and spread in a short radius. Mike felt Stamina begin to drain before the System named the curse. At the same time, a thin necromantic tether reached toward the lightning lingering around his bracers.
The lich's first two lives had studied impact, movement, formation, and circuitry.
The third intended to make Mike's own storm return through him.
A fan of bone spears formed around Aethran, each aligned to Mike's gaze.
Behind the lich, Banner III remained black and taut.
The bone spears launched.
