The dead chose their first deaths before Mike entered the Court.
The front rank lay across the pale avenues with black-iron knives beside their hands. Mist gathered under their armor, entered through the wounds in their throats, and lifted them in one coordinated motion.
Every neck returned inside a heavy collar of fused bone. Choir Wights rose with their jaws sealed and broad resonating plates across their chests. Wardens gained shields whose upper rims locked against the new collars. Knights drew shorter blades that could fight inside the tight formation those defenses required.
They had sacrificed voice and flexibility to deny decapitation, throat strikes, and the close angles Mike favored.
The bell had taught Aethran how Mike fought. Aethran had used the lesson before the battle began.
Mike drank the stamina tonic already waiting at the front of Inventory.
[Stamina Tonic Used]
Remaining: 1
Effect: Regeneration increased for 180 seconds.
Heat loosened the left thigh and steadied the tremor in his bruised forearm. It did not erase fatigue; it gave his body a better chance to answer what he demanded of it.
He stepped under the arch.
The Ossuary Court advanced.
Wardens formed the front wall. Knights moved in the narrow spaces behind them, and the altered Choir Wights struck their breastplates with open palms. The resulting note traveled through shields and stone rather than air. Mike felt it in his ribs, a blunt cadence meant to delay his feet while the formation closed.
He gave them the center avenue.
Mike stormstepped right, spending Mana for movement, and ran along the dry fountain toward the dead white tree. The formation turned as one. Heavy collars kept heads facing forward, so the outer Knights had to rotate their whole bodies to track him.
That blind angle was the first gift of their chosen adaptation.
He shaped Thunderfall Sphere and fixed the stone behind the right flank as its target. Chaos replaced Mana, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health. The denser storm gathered in his hand. He threw past the front shields.
Lightning burst from the rear. It entered armor seams, crossed the locked shield rims, and made the very formation meant to protect their necks conduct as one body. The front rank seized. The outer Warden could not turn its head to see why.
Mike hit it from the side with Chaos-fueled Stormstrike.
The shield held. The fused collar held. Its knee failed beneath force they had not been designed to distribute.
He kicked the leg inward, shoved the falling Warden under the next shield, and opened a gap. The tonic burned warm through his muscles as he drove into it.
The Choir Wights tried to produce another chest-note. Mike fixed Stormstrike on the nearest sternum and hit before its palm landed. Chaos replaced Mana, Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health, and the skill drove lightning into the resonating plate. The adaptation became an amplifier and split the Wight down the center.
It stayed dead. The knife at its side proved this was already its second body.
Mike moved through the formation by breaking the assumption that every attack would seek the head. Knees, elbows, shield grips, hip joints. He used contact discharges where iron offered a path and fueled Stormstrike with Chaos when a structure needed to end immediately. He never stayed in front of the heavy collars long enough for their narrow blades to build a rhythm.
The dead tree became his pivot. Its roots rose from the fountain in loops high enough to interrupt a shield wall. Mike crossed between them. Wardens tried to follow and lost overlap. Knights attempted to flank and found their vision blocked by the collars they had chosen.
Three went down under their own weight. A fourth took a Chaos-fueled Skyhammer Bolt through the back after Mike called the strike onto the iron boss of its shield. The chain arcs found the Wights clustered around it.
The Court answered by opening its streets.
Bone barricades folded into the ground. Two more avenues revealed ranks that had not killed themselves. Wight Mages stood behind them with frost gathering around their hands, and a figure in long judicial robes waited at the central fountain plinth.
It carried a staff made from the shaft of a civic standard. The old emblem of seven rivers remained beneath a crown of black iron nailed over it.
[Court Justiciar - Level 34]
Function: Command / Sentence / Second-Life Coordination
The Justiciar struck the staff against stone.
Every intact corpse in the Court moved.
The self-killed front rank could not rise a third time, but the Wardens and Knights Mike had just killed for the first time pulled themselves together beneath the command. Their adaptations formed around his methods: braced joints, insulated plates, broken silhouettes rebuilt for low attacks.
The Justiciar was synchronizing their return before he could place the bodies badly.
Mike called Skyhammer Bolt at the commander and stopped the skill before release.
Three Wight Mages stood close enough to the target that a Chaos-fueled chain could drive its amplified secondary effects through the staff, the civic standard, and the old mechanisms beneath the fountain. The attack would hit hard. It could also let Aethran's necromancy redirect Mike's supplied Chaos through a network he had not mapped.
He chose a cleaner route.
Stormstep fixed his displacement behind the dead tree. Mana paid the movement cost. The Justiciar lost sight of him for one heartbeat, and Mike used the roots to cross the center without offering a straight cast.
Frost lances struck the white trunk. Ice spread across ancient bark, making it brittle.
Mike slammed a normal, Mana-light current into one root, using the low output as a tool rather than an attack. Heat from resistance cracked the ice. A section of frozen wood fell across the avenue and separated the Justiciar from half its returning soldiers.
Then Mike resumed his default.
He fixed Chaotic Storm Pulse on the hostile bodies around him. Chaos replaced Mana, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health.
Lightning expanded around him in a violent ring. Chaos strengthened the release and introduced a brief edge of heat. The pulse caught the Justiciar, two Mages, and the first revived Knight. Frost became steam. The judicial robes burned away. The old civic staff remained intact, but the black iron crown nailed over its emblem glowed red.
Mike caught the staff before it fell.
The Justiciar held the other end.
It spoke one word.
"Yield."
Authority struck Mike through the weapon. His titles and Transcendent Soul blunted the command, but the force behind it still locked his fingers for a fraction. The Justiciar pulled him toward a line of rising bone spikes.
Mike could not release the staff quickly enough.
He changed the direction instead.
He stepped onto the nearest root, let the Justiciar pull, and used that force to vault over the spikes. His boots cleared the black points by inches. He landed beside the robed body and drove his forehead into its face.
Bone cracked.
The Justiciar tried to speak again. Mike placed a Chaos-fueled Stormstrike against the resonating cavity beneath its jaw and ended the word inside it.
The first body collapsed.
[First Death Recorded]
Name: Court Justiciar
Cause: Close impact / internal lightning / command interrupted
The System chimed before the second body formed.

Stat Points Gained: +60
Unspent Stat Points: 60
Recovery: Minor recovery applied.
Warmth tightened the worst tears in his muscles. Stamina rose enough to keep the tonic useful instead of merely slowing decline. The frost burn still ached beneath the jerkin, and Health already spent through Chaotic Conduit did not return in full.
The Court denied him even the length of a full breath.
The two Wight Mages caught by Chaotic Storm Pulse began their second lives on opposite sides of the fountain. One rebuilt itself inside overlapping ice scales that vented heat and charge into the floor. The other returned with its ribs separated into narrow, floating segments, giving direct lightning too many paths to cross before reaching anything vital.
They had reacted to the Chaos Mike supplied without gaining any of their own. One body rejected concentrated variance through layers. The other dispersed it through distance. Aethran's law could study true Chaos; it could not originate what belonged only to Mike and Loki.
The scaled Mage cast first. Frost spread along the black command marks and erupted beneath Mike's boots. He stormstepped clear, but the spell pursued through the marked ground and caught the back of his damaged boot. Ice locked the outer leather to a paving stone.
The segmented Mage lifted both hands. Six rib pieces aligned around it like sights, each holding a small frost lance.
Mike had a heartbeat to choose between abandoning the boot and taking the volley.
He invoked Stormshroud. Chaos replaced Mana, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health while the skill kept its mantle close around him.
Health paid for a mantle of close lightning. The shroud struck the ice at his heel from every direction, breaking the bond without requiring a single concentrated path. He tore free as the six lances arrived. Four burst against storm light; two reached him, one cutting through the shroud across his ribs and the other opening his right forearm above the bracer.
The scaled Mage had built itself to vent a direct strike. Mike gave it continued contact instead.
He crossed the fountain rim and caught the creature around the waist. Stormshroud crawled across every ice scale at once. The Mage tried to send the charge into the ground, but Mike lifted it from the civic stones and drove it against the dead tree. With no floor path left, the adaptation fed current from one scale into the next until frost armor became a closed circuit.
Mike ended the second life with a Chaos-fueled Stormstrike through the back.
The segmented Mage released another volley.
He pulled the dead body into the line. Frost lances embedded in its scales and pinned it to the tree. Mike then fixed Skyhammer Bolt on the impaled corpse rather than the dispersed target. Chaos replaced Mana, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health. The stronger activation sent chaining arcs from scale to frost lance, from frost lance to each floating rib, and reached the Mage through six simultaneous paths.
Its adaptation could stretch one current thin. Six arriving together folded the body inward.
Mike closed Stormshroud as soon as both Mages stayed down. Sustained protection had cost more Health than the cuts it prevented, but it had bought the mobility he needed.

Health: 49%

The Justiciar rose before he could reach for a draught.
Its jaw and chest had fused into a single sealed structure. Four black-iron bands circled its torso, each etched with a different command. It no longer needed to speak. When the civic staff struck stone, the bands carried the order through the Court.
[Second-Life Adaptation]
Silent Sentence: Commands propagate through marked ground.
Black lines raced away from the staff.
Every revived enemy stepped at once. The Court's avenues became a diagram of enforced motion, with Wardens closing intersections and Knights driving Mike toward the dry fountain. Wight Mages cast along the marked ground, their frost following the same lines around cover.
The Justiciar had traded a vulnerable voice for the entire floor.
Mike looked at the dead tree, the fountain, and the civic statues facing the empty plinth. The Court had once been a public square. Its paving stones still carried thin bronze borders around each district emblem. Aethran's black command marks crossed those older lines without replacing them.
Two networks occupied the same ground.
Mike remembered the chain gallery: one for the river, two for the road, three for the hands that remain.
He pulled the river pilot's compass from Inventory and dropped it onto the nearest bronze emblem. The needle turned toward no true north. It pointed instead along the old civic circuit, toward the fountain where seven district lines met.
The Justiciar struck its staff again.
Mike ran with the command rather than against it. The black line demanded movement toward the fountain. He accepted the direction and made the speed his own. Wardens closed around the route, expecting resistance.
He stormstepped through the final gap and planted both bracers on the dry basin.
This was infrastructure, not a target. He fed it Mana in a precise sequence, preserving Health and avoiding drift through the ancient network. Seven bronze district lines lit beneath the black commands.
The fountain opened.
Water did not return. Names did.
Thousands of pale letters rose from the basin and flowed through the Court's old circuits. They crossed Aethran's marks at every intersection. The Justiciar issued another silent command, but the ground now carried too much of Ilyra's original purpose to transmit it cleanly.
Wardens turned at different times. Knights received only fragments of the order. Frost followed the wrong route and sealed two shield walls together.
Mike used the failure.
He centered Thunderhead Descent over the fountain approaches. Chaos replaced Mana, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health while the skill's area rule punished every attempt to restore formation. Lightning fell on moving Wardens, clustered Knights, and Mages trying to change position. Health dropped in steady measures while the tonic and new level kept his legs beneath him.
The Court became storm-lit history. Names flowed underfoot. The dead tree reflected white-blue fire from every frozen branch. Statues that had faced an erased king now stood inside a battle for the memory he had tried to own.
Mike moved through the descending strikes.
He killed enemies on their first lives near obstacles their adaptations would hate. He finished second lives where the civic lines could carry current around new insulation. When a Knight returned with knees that resisted his low attacks, he used the fountain wall to break its spine. When a Mage returned with an overhead shell, he fixed Thunderfall Sphere beneath the robe, fueled it with Chaos, and let Chaotic Conduit take the cost from Health.
The Justiciar tried to leave the old circuits.
Mike did not let it.
He threw the river pilot's compass. The brass casing struck the black-iron overlay on the staff and lodged beneath one nail. It was not an attack skill, just a piece of a dead city returning to its stolen emblem.
The needle snapped toward the fountain.
Every bronze line pulled current through the staff.
The Justiciar locked in place as its Silent Sentence carried Ilyra's names instead of Aethran's orders. Mike crossed the last distance, caught the staff with one hand, and drove a Chaos-fueled Stormstrike through the fused chest.
The second body shattered.
Its death broke coordination across the Court. Mike sustained Thunderhead Descent for three more heartbeats, ended the remaining movement, and cut the skill before Health loss passed his limit.
The System chimed amid falling bone.

The level warmth arrived through a body already carrying too much strain. It closed a cut along his ribs, restored a narrow margin of Stamina, and left the deeper channel ache untouched.
Mike dismissed the waiting allocation. He had spent his last pool for a known problem in the chain gallery. The next one hundred and twenty points could wait until he understood the one beyond the black gate.
He drank one health draught. Warmth spread across the bruised chest and frost-burned shoulder, accelerating physical repair without quieting the raw sensation along his channels.
[Health Draught Used]

When the Court finally stopped moving, Mike stood beside the fountain and listened to the names fade.
The river pilot's compass lay fused to the Justiciar's staff. He left both on the empty plinth, the old emblem visible now that the black overlay had cracked away. The evacuation list and copper message remained in Inventory. Those would leave with him if he survived.
Across the Court, the Throne Vault opened.
Black iron doors withdrew into the walls. Dry air carried parchment, grave soil, and the faint smell of a storm that had passed centuries ago.
Three black banners hung behind a throne of pale stone.
The three necromantic circuits Mike had traced in the chain gallery terminated at their poles. One banner held a dim outline like a body waiting behind cloth. The other two were equally black but still, reserves rather than empty decoration.
A private System pane clarified the structure.
[Boss Anchor Set Detected]
Black Banners: 3 / 3
Current embodiment: Anchor I active
Reserve rebirths: 2
Rule: A death exhausts the active anchor. If a reserve remains, the next banner forms a new embodiment.
Three anchors. Three lives in total. Two returns after the first death.
No banner could be allowed to gray twice. No life existed outside the set.
Mike checked the cost of reaching them.
[Field Status]
Health: 67%

A thin figure stepped from behind the throne.
Aethran's polished skull carried a black-iron crown. His robes were stitched with the same civic names his army had been forced to forget, each one crossed through in silver thread. He regarded the living fountain, the broken Court, and Mike with an interest too old to be surprise.
"You heard them," the lich said.
Mike let lightning gather beneath his bracers. "They were louder than you."
Aethran's gaze moved to the storm light.
"You are not the first storm to reach my throne," he said. "You are merely the first one foolish enough to believe the crack was left for you."
The first banner opened like a black wing behind him.
The doors sealed at Mike's back.
