Six hours after the Tutorial announced its ending, Stormbreak Ridge had stopped looking like one frightened crowd.
Helena stood beneath the eastern watchpost and watched a settlement exist where three frightened camps had collided six hours earlier. Children slept beneath thornwood roofs. Fighters from Ridgewatch and Riverside shared the wall without liking one another. Hilltop’s cook fed people who had once accused him of hiding scarcity. The arrangement was young, imperfect, and alive.
The countdown hovered at the edge of Helena's thoughts because she chose to keep it there.
[Tutorial Closure: 10 Days, 17 Hours, 26 Minutes]
Ten days was enough time to become stronger. It was also enough time to ruin everything through haste.
A System pane had waited since the regional quest closed. Helena had refused to open it while hundreds of lives depended on her attention. Now, for one minute, Stormbreak could survive without her eyes.
Helena accepted the pane.
[Class Proposal: Regent]
You preserve the work of a power that cannot remain still. You turn victory into continuity, order into capacity, and authority into action that survives absence.
Rarity: Rare
Archetype: Courtcraft
Core Functions
Castellan's Ledger (Rank F, Active)
Within a recognized holding, compile registered stores, assignments, return times, and reported perimeter conditions. Information depends on records supplied by designated workers. It cannot inspect private panes, unreported possessions, or conditions nobody has observed.
Regent's Mandate (Rank F, Passive)
Witnessed operational orders carry increased clarity and resistance to panic within the recognized holding. The effect cannot compel obedience, overwrite another authority, or make an impossible order executable.
Liege Relay (Rank F, Active)
Transmit a brief message to a designated liege within the same Tutorial region. Long distance, interference, injury, and repeated use increase delay and strain. No private interface data is transmitted unless its owner deliberately includes a selected copy.
[Candidate: Accept]
[Candidate: Decline]
Helena read the limits before the powers.
The Ledger knew only what her people fed it. The Mandate sharpened orders but did not make fools competent. The Relay could carry a warning, not substitute for a runner, a map, or judgment on the ground.
Those were not weaknesses. They were the difference between a tool and a fantasy.
She accepted.
For a breath, every declared responsibility in Stormbreak became a line of pale light behind her eyes. The spring connected to Marina and Lia. The eastern wall connected to Tasha's current watch leader. Patrol marks extended into the forest, some clean and some flickering because their groups had not reported since leaving. Stores appeared as broad categories rather than miraculous inventories: food sufficient, clean cloth constrained, metal critically limited, medicine dependent on Marina's output.
Then the impression faded, leaving a private interface she could call again.
[Class Registered: Regent]
Recognized Holding: Stormbreak Ridge
Liege Designation: Required
Helena looked across the settlement.
Mike stood beside Arin at the weapons rack, turning a poor spearhead in his fingers while Arin explained exactly why it would fail. He listened. That mattered. A man could be powerful enough to conquer a region and still destroy it by refusing expertise.
She selected Michael Storm.
[Liege Designated]
Liege: Count Michael Storm — title functions currently locked
The System offered no proclamation. No light descended. Helena preferred it that way.
She opened Castellan's Ledger and tested its first summary.
[Stormbreak Operational Summary]
Wall Coverage: reported complete
Field Groups Active: 3
Field Groups Preparing: 5
Return Status: 1 report overdue
Primary Bottlenecks: worked metal, restorative supplies, trained runners
One report overdue.
A distress call rose from the western trees before she could close the pane.
“Open! Rook’s group—help us!”
It was Cal’s voice. His brother knew it instantly and ran for the gate bar.
The Ledger knew only that Rook’s group was overdue. It did not know whether Cal was bleeding beyond the wall, whether the call had crossed the forest honestly, or whether the thing that had learned Marina’s voice now knew his. Good. A class should give Helena reach, not relieve her of judgment.
Regent’s Mandate answered the decision she had already made.
“Gate stays barred. Wall to readiness. Nobody moves toward a voice until eyes confirm a body.”
Her words crossed Stormbreak without a shout. Fear still moved; it simply found the command waiting before it could become a stampede.
Cal’s brother seized the bar anyway. Tasha caught his wrist.
“That’s him,” the man said. “I know my brother.”
The voice beyond the wall screamed his name.
Helena felt the entire settlement listening for her to become either cruel or foolish.
“Rook approached from the north,” she said. “The sound is west, and it gave us no challenge answer. If we open blind, whatever follows that voice reaches every child behind this wall.”
The western watcher leaned over the parapet. “Movement! Rook’s people at the bend. One crawling shape among them.”
The gate remained shut.
For three heartbeats, Helena could hear nothing but Cal begging in the trees. Then Rook’s real voice cut through it.
“Hold the gate! We have it pinned!”
His group broke from the mist in a ragged wedge. One fighter limped between two companions. Rook and Cal dragged a resin-smeared gray creature across the mud on a looped cord. Its narrow body twisted with startling force. A swollen sac beneath its jaw convulsed.
“Brother!” it shrieked in Cal’s voice.
Cal’s real mouth was clenched around the end of the cord.
The man at the bar went still.
“Tasha, covered entry,” Helena ordered. “Rook, kill it before the threshold.”
Tasha’s fighters formed a shielded mouth inside the gate. Only then did the bar rise. The gray thing drove all four limbs into the mud and opened its throat for another call.
Rook stamped on the swollen sac.
The creature’s stolen voices collapsed into one wet crack. It thrashed once more, and Cal put a spear through the base of its skull. The forest went silent.
“Inside,” Helena said.
The gate admitted the living, the wounded, and the corpse, then closed before relief could loosen the wall. Regent’s Mandate faded from Helena’s breath, leaving an ache beneath her sternum.
Cal’s brother embraced him hard enough to make both men stagger. Then he looked at Helena across Cal’s shoulder.
“Thank you for not opening,” he said.
Helena nodded once. There was no answer that would improve the cost of being right.
Rook deliberately projected the narrow result pane to Helena and the nearby defenders.
[Kill Confirmed: Hollowcaller — Level 7]
Contributors: Rook’s gathering group
Recovered: Resonant throat sac, adhesive gland
“Reason for the delay?” Helena asked.
“We saw it shadowing us and chose the pursuit,” Rook said. “My decision.”
“Next time, your runner leaves before you chase.”
“Understood.”
The corpse made the copied terror finite: gray flesh, a useful organ, enough blood to stain one boot. Helena ordered its likeness shown to every watch. Sound alone would open nothing.
Mike approached while Dion carried a charcoal sketch of the Hollowcaller toward the next watch.
“I received the designation,” he said. “Regent?”
“Rare. Courtcraft. The Ledger shows only what people report. The Mandate strengthens an order without compelling anyone. The Relay may carry a brief message through interference. None of it is omniscience.”
Mike waited instead of asking to see her private pane. “And you accepted.”
“I did.”
Mike looked at the dead mimic, the closed gate, and Cal alive beside his brother. “You are Stormbreak’s Regent.”
“The System proposed a class, not a term of office.”
“Neither am I.” His voice left no space for the easier interpretation. “This is standing authority, Helena. Not command until I return. Not command only when I am outside. You govern operations and defense whether I am beyond the wall or standing beside you.”
She studied him to be certain he understood what he had just entrusted to her. “If I order you away from a target?”
“Give me the reason and the objective. I may find another method, but I won’t break your formation to prove I can.”
“And if your title unlocks tomorrow?”
“Then the Count gains a Regent. The Regent does not become a temporary clerk.”
That was not obedience. It was better: trust between two powers with different information, granted without an expiry hidden inside it.
“Accepted,” Helena said.
Helena delayed the next departures until every watcher had seen the Hollowcaller’s face. Tasha accepted command of the first scouts. Tomás kept Hilltop’s hunters independent outside assigned defense. Marina reserved her restoratives for injuries that could end a retreat. Different agreements remained different without becoming cracks in the wall.
When the gate reopened, Helena stood where everyone could see her.
“Return alive with something that matters,” she said. “Experience. Material. Knowledge. If the danger exceeds you, surviving it is the victory.”
Mike stepped beside her. “Bring back something you can use after the Tutorial. Then teach someone else what made it possible.”
The countdown continued above them.
[Tutorial Closure: 10 Days, 15 Hours, 58 Minutes]
The first gathering and experience groups departed. Mike’s party waited until Stormbreak had proved it could spare them, then approached the gate.
Arin carried a substitute iron-banded shield chosen from Stormbreak's limited stock; the Heartwood Aegis was gone, and nobody pretended otherwise. Marina kept the center with her medicine case secure. Vex vanished into the forest edge before the gate fully opened. Ryan watched the distances. Lumi ran beside Mike, her tails cutting pale arcs through the morning light.
Before he crossed the threshold, Mike gave Helena a selected projection of the objective he had set for the core party. It contained no character sheet and no private resources, only the facts she needed to plan around his absence.
[Field Objective: Shared Copy]
Primary: Identify and defeat an elite threat suitable for Rank-F threshold progression.
Secondary: Prevent contact between elite threats and Stormbreak patrols.
Abort: Civilian route overlap, formation-breaking injury, or loss of controlled retreat.
Helena read it, then pointed at the first line. "If you find something too weak for you but dangerous enough for the others, do not destroy it before they can contribute."
"I'll break its command and let them own the finish when that is safe."
"And if it is not safe?"
Lightning crawled once across his knuckles. "Then it picked the wrong region."
That answer carried appetite, but it also carried the distinction she needed. Helena closed the shared copy.
"Return condition?" Helena called.
Mike looked back. "Half Health for me. One serious injury for anyone else. Any threat we cannot isolate from new patrols."
"Return time?"
"Before the third blue signal."
"Then go."
They did.
Helena waited until the trees swallowed them, then turned back toward Stormbreak. The spear was moving again. Her new class existed to make certain it returned to a stronger hand.
Ryan felt the offer arrive less than an hour beyond the wall.
It touched his awareness more gently than the System, as though courtesy could make a binding harmless. A private pane unfolded while he walked.
[External Interest]
A distant Patron offers terms. Identity concealed under Tutorial restrictions. Acceptance creates a binding relationship.
[Candidate: Review Terms]
[Candidate: Decline]
Ryan did not slow. He had spent too much of his life studying geometry to confuse an unseen destination with a safe one. Power without coordinates was merely falling with confidence.
He selected Decline.
The pane vanished. For several steps, gravity felt a fraction heavier around his shoulders. Then even that attention withdrew.
Mike glanced back. "Problem?"
Ryan considered the question. The offer had been private. Keeping it secret was his right; telling the party was his choice.
"A Patron offered a binding without identifying itself," he said. "I refused."
Mike's expression hardened, though not at Ryan. "Any consequence?"
"None I can measure."
"Tell us if that changes."
Ryan nodded.
Ahead, Lumi stopped beside a rain-black trunk. Mike raised one hand, and the party settled into formation around a distant cluster of moving signatures.
The first hunt beneath Helena’s standing authority was waiting in the mist.
