Seventy-four minutes after Mike left Kade's ruined camp, green sap woke beneath his fingertips. One bead flared on a black root; another answered farther through the rain.
“The others remain at Stormbreak,” T-Guide_02471 said. “No pursuing signature has committed to this trail.”
Mike kept moving. Blood still warmed the cloth beneath his ribs, his torn thigh shortened every stride, and the hatchet cut across his shoulder rasped against a damaged Mana channel. Marina's draught was spent. Yellow ghosts lingered around every pale fungus when he breathed too deeply.
Thunderfall waited behind the pain, vast enough to make desperation feel like permission.
He left it closed.
At a flooded cut, runoff had drowned Vex's marks and split the forest into three plausible paths. Mike crouched, touched the brown water, and spent a thread of Mana. The spark slid across buried roots until pale sap answered beneath the right bank. He followed it around a fallen cedar, one careful current accomplishing what another explosion never could.
“Stormbreak is less than two kilometers west.”
“Good.”
His body disagreed, but it kept moving.
The last basalt shelf before the ravine appeared through the rain four minutes later. Green marks curved around its western face toward the shelter. Fresh white sap traced the southern withdrawal route along higher ground, ready to carry the party away once Mike reached them. Vex stood where the return trail entered the final hollow, his back against the dark stone and a knife held low enough to disappear beside his leg.
The blade went away when he recognized Mike.
“You look better than everyone who tried to stop you,” Vex said. His gaze moved from Mike's shoulder to the blood beneath his ribs and finished on the hand that no longer closed completely. “That isn't the same as looking good.”
"Kade is dead."
Vex's face changed by a fraction. Satisfaction sharpened it without becoming surprise. "The thunder suggested a disagreement of that kind."
He looked east, where white-violet light still showed at the base of the clouds whenever the rain thinned. For days, Kade's patrols had defined where Vex could scout, which trails carried a human price, and how often the party had to wonder whether a snapped branch belonged to an animal or a knife. The absence of that constraint was too large to feel like relief yet.
"His people?" Vex asked.
"Four prisoners got out. Two fighters surrendered; one stayed with them toward Riverside, and the other took the southwestern fork alone. I pulled the convergence west before I left." Mike nodded toward the white marks. "Status at Stormbreak?"
“Ready for more than an hour. Ryan has the false signatures primed, Marina has Arin walking inside more roots than armor, and Lumi has threatened everyone who touched the packs incorrectly.” Vex stepped close enough to offer his shoulder without announcing the offer. “We kept the return line alive because no threat crossed the outer sigils. If one had, I would have cut green and taken them south.”
Mike put his good hand on Vex's shoulder. Pride was useful only when it did not slow the team carrying him home.
"Then cut it behind us," he said.
Vex severed the awakened bead with the tip of his knife. The sap dimmed without harming the root that carried it, and the next green mark east went dark in answer. He repeated the cut twice as they moved, closing a line that had done its job. White remained untouched. Whatever hunted the storm would be offered rain, false residue, and a route no longer connected to the people Mike meant to reach.
They reached the ravine before the predators found reason to follow.
It no longer resembled a camp. Bedrolls, harvested materials, water skins, and Marina's alchemical case had been divided into loads. Ryan knelt beside the last boundary sigil, one Void-touched hand suspended over its light while he teased the party's residue into three fading trails. The northern trace pointed toward bare rock. The western one followed runoff. The real route remained south, marked in white where someone searching for ordinary Mana would see only wet bark.
Arin stood near the lean-to with an improvised shield strapped to her good arm. Ryan and Vex had bound two shelter planks over a scavenged buckler. It lacked the Heartwood Aegis's living barrier; that shield lay split beside the discarded armor, but the replacement could still turn a blade. The destroyed section of Arin's breastplate had been removed. Living bands crossed the padded layer beneath it and tightened with every shallow breath, holding her ribs in the alignment Marina had rebuilt. She was upright and alert. Nothing about her stance suggested she had mistaken that achievement for recovery.
Lumi reached Mike first. The luminfox cleared the space between them in a bright Thunderstep and stopped against his uninjured side, six tails rigid with alarm. Her nose found the blood beneath his coat. Her ears flattened, and the bond struck him with a fierce sequence of relief, anger, and the urgent need to verify every part of him at once.
Mike lowered his good hand to her brow. “I came back.”
She pressed into his palm, then turned and barked once at Marina.
“I noticed,” Marina said.
She crossed the ravine at once, but she did not waste time demanding a story. One hand found the puncture beneath Mike's ribs. The other settled against his throat while she counted two breaths and felt the third catch. Verdant light entered in narrow strands, tracing damaged tissue without pretending every injury belonged to the same solution.
“Did you use Thunderfall again?” she asked.
“No. The draught is spent.”
Marina met his eyes. Rain ran down her face, but the smile that appeared was unmistakable. “Then you kept the promise that mattered.”
“Kade helped by dying on schedule.”
“Very considerate of him. Sit against the carrying frame.” She guided Mike down beside the dismantled lean-to, then looked from his wounds to the living bands around Arin. The diagnostic rhythm beneath her fingers matched the green cadence pulsing through Arin's brace, one working newly begun and one sustained throughout his return.
Marina went very still.
“I have been treating this as separate wounds,” she said. “My class disagrees.”
Arin shifted her shield to make the roots beneath it stop creaking. “I offered to hold myself together through spite.”
“Spite lacks the correct affinity,” Marina said. “It can carry one of the packs.”
Mike laughed once and regretted the breath. The sound still loosened something in Arin's face.
She cut his coat away from the puncture and planted her staff between him and Arin. The roots supporting Arin's ribs loosened without releasing their hold. New strands crossed the rain-dark ground, climbed the carrying frame, and circled Mike's waist and injured thigh. Marina's Restoration entered the living network from both hands.
The first pulse made every root draw breath.
A private notice caught Marina's eyes. Surprise widened them for one heartbeat; hunger replaced it in the next. She selected the skill notice and projected that copy above her staff while the rest of her pane remained hers alone.
[Restoration Synthesis Recognized]
[New Legendary Skill Awakened: Blooming Resurgence]
Rank: E
Effect: Condenses staged Restoration into one regenerative cycle through a living medium.
Limits: Additional simultaneous targets require independent living anchors.
Marina read it once. Her smile sharpened. “Blooming Resurgence.”
White flowers opened along the roots.
The ravine filled with green-gold light bright enough to turn the rain into falling glass. Marina kept the long working around Arin intact through the staff, its pale scaffolds holding rebuilt ribs away from the lung she had spent Mike's entire return restoring. Blooming Resurgence concentrated on Mike.
Heat poured beneath his ribs. Torn vessels sealed before the next pulse could spill through them. The deepest separation in the muscle drew together, leaving the outer layers incomplete but strong enough to survive the march. A second wave entered his thigh, aligned the worst tear, and closed it halfway before forming a green lattice around what remained. A third threaded through his lungs. Tiny thorns caught the living spores without cutting the inflamed airway, and Verdant light carried every yellow mote into a leaf that blackened and folded shut beside Marina's wrist.
The resurgence reached Mike's shoulder last. It repaired torn muscle around the hatchet cut, then stopped at the storm-scarred Mana channel beneath it. Restoration owned blood, nerve, muscle, and breath; it did not own that magical structure. Marina wrapped the channel in living support instead of forcing her power into a domain it could not safely rebuild.
Her reserve fell fast enough for Mike to feel the flowers dim through the roots. Blooming Resurgence could finish his outer wounds, or she could keep the living brace around Arin and enough power for an attack during the withdrawal. Marina ended the skill with Mike's lethal damage reversed, both patients transport-ready, and a usable reserve still behind her eyes.
The flowers closed.
Marina swayed. Ryan caught her elbow, but she remained on her feet and stared at the two stable rhythms in the roots with fierce delight.
“One body, five injuries, one cycle,” she said. “Next I want the whole formation.”
“You rebuilt a lung while waiting for me and cleaned spores out of mine when I arrived,” Mike said.
“An encouraging first attempt.” She crouched again before her legs could object and spread cool salve over his scorched palm. Blooming Resurgence had cleared dead tissue and restored circulation; the new skin remained too delicate for an unwrapped grip. “The shoulder channel still gets stabilization, not repair. Your torso and thigh are closed far enough to travel. Arin keeps her brace until new bone survives movement. I have reserve for one emergency field, and I intend to keep it.”
Ryan held Mike's injured hand steady while Marina wrapped it. Vex moved around them, dividing Mike's share of the supplies among packs that other people would carry.
While Marina tied the final knot, Mike projected the passive he had earned in Kade's camp.
[Stormwrought Resolve]
Rank: F
Rarity: Rare
Type: Passive
Effect: While Health or Stamina is below 60%, Arcane Control and Arcane Power increase slightly.
“Useful later,” Marina said. “Today it does not grant you permission to seek the threshold.” She secured his shoulder in a wrap that left his right arm free. “You came back with new power. I would like you to remain alive long enough to learn it.”
Lumi made an approving sound beside her.
“The expert consensus is overwhelming,” Mike said.
Arin approached, each step careful but stable. “Report first. Celebration after we are off the ground Kade knows.”
Mike gave them the useful sequence: Kade's defenders, the freed prisoners, the lure, the single Thunderfall, and the natural bolt he had guided through the barktusk. He omitted no cost and added no spectacle.
“A technique worth remembering,” Ryan said, looking at Mike's bandaged palm.
“After the shoulder heals,” Marina said.
“After that,” Ryan agreed.
“The main atmospheric release was visible across the region,” Ryan said. “Our false trails can divide anyone following residual Mana. They cannot make this ravine forget what happened here.”
“It was already a bad long-term position,” Arin said. She tapped the nearest wall with the edge of her shield. “One entrance we can hold. One entrance that can bury us. Room for six people if none of them need a real structure.”
“Five people and one fox,” Vex said.
Lumi showed him her teeth.
“Six people,” Vex corrected.
Mike looked around the narrow shelter. It had protected them when protection meant surviving one more night. With Kade dead and half the western forest driven from its hunting grounds, that blind ravine had become a trap.
“The evacuation route remains the plan,” he said. “We take the white marks south, clear the storm trace, then choose ground that can become more than a hiding place.”
Vex pulled the charcoal map taken from Kade's scouts out of an inner pocket and unfolded it across a dry section of Arin's discarded breastplate. A water line and the old Riverside approach framed the western half. South of the black pines, the white route crossed beneath a long ridge before turning east. Kade had marked a spring and broken masonry there, then drawn a heavy black circle around the site.
"Broken Stone Ruin," Vex said. "About thirteen kilometers once we turn east. His scouts liked the water and high ground. They also wrote nothing inside that circle, which is usually where useful information goes to die."
He turned the map over. Three short tally cuts marked the reverse beneath the same location, each crossed through. "No names, no return times, and no route notes past the spring. Kade kept sending people toward it anyway. Whatever discouraged them did not discourage him from wanting the ground."
“Stone, high ground, and a spring,” Ryan said.
“If the water is clean,” Marina added.
Arin traced the three approaches with one finger. “And if we can hold them.”
Mike touched the charcoal circle.
"Then we assess it together. Vex finds the edge. Ryan controls distance. Arin holds the retreat route, and Marina decides whether the ground can support us. I deal with whatever made Kade's scouts leave the circle empty."
"We deal with it," Arin said. "You can have the last strike if that helps your feelings."
Mike glanced at the brace beneath her damaged armor. "You hold the retreat route until Marina clears you for more."
"That is still dealing with it."
The answer landed cleanly. Mike nodded.
A private notification formed in response to the decision.
[Establishment Phase Opportunity Registered]
Regional Power Structure: altered — Blood Dagger Camp dissolved.
Current shelter cannot support a permanent settlement.
Objective: Assess and secure a defensible permanent base.
Candidate Site Recorded: Broken Stone Ruin.
Mike deliberately read the notice aloud. T-Guide swept one amber band across the map and then dimmed it.
"I can confirm the distance and permanent water," the orb said. "I cannot classify an occupant I have not observed."
"Good," Mike said. "We'll observe it."
Readiness had been complete for more than an hour. With Mike treated, the report given, and the next position chosen, every reason to keep waiting had ended.
Ryan collapsed the first false signature. Its pale glow ran up the northern wall and dispersed across the rain in a thin fan. A second false trail failed west moments later, leaving anyone tracking Mana with two dying answers and no reason to search south first. Vex shouldered the last shared pack. Marina placed one hand against Arin's living brace, received a steady green pulse, and stepped away.
They left the ravine on the white-marked path.
Vex ranged ahead and vanished before the first bend. Arin took the left front where her shield could cover Marina without forcing her injured ribs to turn. Ryan held the right rear, ready to bend an unexpected charge away from the formation. Marina walked in the center with one hand free for roots. Lumi stayed at Mike's heel until the forest offered something worth challenging, while Mike set a pace his wounds and Arin's brace could sustain.
Behind them, the last glow from Ryan's northern false signature faded into rain. Ahead, the route turned south beneath the black pines before carrying them east toward spring water, open sightlines, and stone broad enough to build upon.
Kade had circled the ruin and crossed out three scouting tallies. Mike had killed the man who wanted it.
Now he was going to meet the reason Kade had never taken it.
