Kade’s watchers stayed with them for the first kilometer.
Mike sensed three humanoid signatures moving beyond clear identification range. They stopped when the party stopped and widened whenever Vex disappeared into the trees. Their discipline revealed more than a red strip would have. Frightened survivors watched from shelter; trained scouts preserved distance and collected patterns.
Vex returned from his second false turn with damp soil on one knee. “Three, possibly four. One steps where the others stepped, so Stormsense may be merging them at range.” He had left a strip from Mike's old cloak on a game trail bending north. Their real way back crossed exposed roots to the south, marked only by two white mushrooms Marina grew between stones.
“Can you lose them?” Arin asked.
“I can make them choose between following us and knowing where they are.”
Mike kept moving southeast. “Give them the obvious route. Hide the one we use to withdraw.”
Ryan glanced toward the last disturbance. “You expect them to attack at the Node.”
“They waited for your mana to empty before approaching you. A convergence gives them the same opportunity on a larger scale.”
Marina touched the pale suspension at her belt. “Then we save enough power for the second fight. The monsters will not be the only ones coming.”
“And Mike attracts everything loud,” Vex said.
Lumi’s tails lifted beside Mike. The bond carried bright agreement.
The corridor announced itself through dead ground. Trees leaned away from a broad scar of churned mud and broken roots. Bones lay embedded along its length, arranged by repeated traffic rather than one battle. Near the far end, a black System-metal structure rose waist-high above the mire, its geometric lines dim beneath pale root filaments.
The Regional Data Node pulsed once.
Every bestial signature around it moved.
Mike’s private pane identified the event while the others received their own notices.
[Overflow Convergence Detected: Verdant Scar Corridor]
Primary Objective: preserve Regional Data Node.
Secondary Objective: neutralize convergence source.
Adaptive Predator Density: rising.
Hostile-Candidate Activity: correlated.
He relayed the fields. Arin studied the scar rather than the words. “Node sits on a low rise. Mud restricts the left. Broken trunks restrict the right. We hold between them and keep the northern edge open.”
Ryan crouched and sent a minor Weight Shift across the ground. “The mud is shallow near the rise and deep along both sides. Something has been funneling traffic toward the metal.”
Marina pressed her staff into the soil. Green light returned stained yellow. “A root organ is pulsing beneath the Node. It belongs to the Maw’s old circulation, but it is no longer connected to a core. It keeps calling because calling is the only function it has left.”
Ryan studied the black metal without touching it. “The roots are pulling the whole rise out of alignment. If they finish, the Node may remain standing and forget what part of the world it describes.”
“Then we keep both alive until Marina can cut them apart,” Arin said.
“Can you stop it safely?” Mike asked.
“I can separate it from the living roots. You destroy it between heartbeats. If we cut first, all the stored Mana floods whatever is still alive nearby.”
Movement broke across the mud.
Three Duskhounds emerged from a corpse hollow. A bark-plated Tusker followed, then two bristlecats descended from the fractured canopy. More eyes opened between the trees.
The spill had begun.
Arin planted the Heartwood Aegis. “Formation.”
The first Duskhound crossed the shallow center. Arin caught its leap and spread a barrier over Marina and Ryan. Mike opened Chaotic Conduit, paid the tested Health cost, and drove Stormstrike through the creature’s shoulder. Violet-edged branches sought the green circulation and disrupted both forelegs.
Vex ended it before it hit the ground.
The other two split around Arin. Ryan placed Void Aegis across the right approach, stealing the second creature’s force. Lumi Thunderstepped into the suspended body, and Static Ring seized its muscles. Marina’s roots took the left Duskhound around its rear legs.
Mike used Chaotic Storm Pulse at restricted radius. Health paid the skill’s cost; lightning expanded through the two controlled targets and stopped against Arin’s barrier. Both predators collapsed with their green channels burned dark.
The suspension at Marina’s belt turned pale grey.
“Stable,” she called. “Accumulation visible.”
The Tusker hit Arin next. Its impact cracked the temporary barrier and shoved her boots through mud. The Aegis itself held. Ryan shifted weight from the creature’s front half to its rear, changing a straight charge into an awkward rise.
Vex cut the tendon behind one knee. Mike entered the exposed flank and used another Chaos-fueled Stormstrike. The divergence split his attack around a barkplate and into the softer tissue beneath. His sternum burned as the Conduit took payment from Health.
The Tusker fell. Arin severed the neck before its regeneration could rebuild the leg.
The bristlecats attacked Marina from above. She raised her Lesser Treant rather than spending a full field. The aspect caught one creature and carried it into Ryan’s Void Aegis, where rejected motion hurled it against a trunk. Lumi intercepted the other in a burst of pale lightning. Vex moved through the opening and ended both with the Thornshadow Twins.
The cull counter climbed from fifteen to twenty-one.
The corridor pulsed again.
More shapes entered from both ends. The convergence source beneath the Node was reacting to blood and mana, increasing its call every time the party defended itself. Mike felt bestial signatures turning toward them from beyond Stormsense range.
“We cannot win by clearing the queue,” Ryan said.
“We do not have to.” Marina pointed at the Node. “Get me there.”
Arin advanced one shield-length at a time. Mike guarded her right, fueling every eligible strike with Chaos while keeping each skill's target narrow. Vex and Lumi denied the flanks. Ryan preserved his damaged channels by changing momentum instead of collapsing bodies.
They reached the rise through a sequence of small victories. Arin blocked. Ryan tilted. Marina bound. Mike broke the hardest target. Vex converted each opening into a dead predator, while Lumi interrupted anything fast enough to threaten the transition.
One level-nine Tusker tried to cross the deep mud rather than face Arin. Its own weight trapped it to the shoulder, but the creature used green circulation to harden the mire around itself and create a temporary path. Mike recognized the adaptation before it completed. He spent Mana on Stormstep, crossed the unstable surface in one blue-white burst, and shattered the first hardened plate and the core beneath it with a Health-paid, Chaos-fueled Stormstrike.
Health cost stacked beneath his sternum. Marina’s suspension darkened by another shade but remained inside their agreed range. Ryan used one brief Weight Shift to overload the unfinished plate behind Mike. It collapsed under two pursuing Duskhounds, and Vex killed both before Arin opened a retreat through the center. Mike returned before the Tusker’s body sank.
The exchange carried the counter to twenty-four and proved the source could turn the environment into a temporary extension of any creature close enough to answer its call.
At the base of the Node, the source became visible.
A swollen knot of green tissue beat beneath translucent roots. Each contraction pushed yellow light through the corridor and called another answer from the trees. The Node’s black surface was intact, but the roots around it tightened with every pulse.
Marina placed both hands on her staff. Her evolved class entered the root network as a competing authority. “Give me three heartbeats to tear it free. Do not let blood reach the knot.”
Arin stood over her. Ryan placed three stones across the rise as prepared references for the brief fields he was allowed to cast. Vex dragged the nearest corpse downslope. Mike faced the next wave.
A level-twelve Verdant Scar Charger led five lesser predators and a level-ten Matron from the southern trees. The Charger paused outside Stormstrike range, saw the formation, and sent the others first. Its Pack Urge synchronized their approach.
Thunderfall Sphere could break the rush. Mana would consume most of his remaining pool. Chaos could replace Mana while Health paid the skill's cost and deliver the force he needed, but Marina's darkening suspension already showed the strain accumulating in his channels.
He chose the Conduit.
"Thunderfall Sphere on the lower mud," he called. "Arin holds the rise. Ryan, keep every branch below the Node."
Ryan set Void Aegis at a downward angle. Arin covered Marina. Vex and Lumi withdrew behind the shield.
Mike condensed a sphere between both hands. Chaos replaced Mana as the sphere's fuel, and Chaotic Conduit took the cost from Health. Violet fractures crossed its blue-white surface. The suspension at Marina's belt darkened to charcoal.
“One release,” she said. “Then no more Chaos fuel.”
Mike threw.
Thunderfall Sphere struck the mud ahead of the Charger. Lightning erupted outward and down, guided by Ryan’s field away from the Node. The first arcs entered the lesser predators and chained through green circulation. A second ring shattered the Charger’s synchronized command, turning the coordinated rush into seven separate failures.
The Health payment hit Mike hard enough to bend his knees. Heat traveled beneath his ribs, and violet charge reached both shoulders.
He closed Chaotic Conduit immediately.
Arin left the rise for one decisive step. She caught the stunned Charger with the Aegis and exposed its throat. Vex entered beneath her shield. Both daggers opened the same artery, and Lumi’s Static Ring prevented the creature from pulling away.
Mike finished it with an ordinary Mana-funded Stormstrike. He needed to preserve Health now, and the narrow release destroyed the remaining green channel without touching the Node.
The Charger died. Four lesser predators died with it. The Matron and the last predator crawled away stunned, where Arin and Vex ended them without requiring another attack from Mike. The seven kills brought the cull counter to thirty-one and the optional count to six.
Marina counted the third pulse.
“Boundary found.” Roots rose around the swollen organ, isolating it from the larger network. “Between beats. Ryan, collapse the outgoing current when Mike strikes.”
Mike approached with the Conduit closed. His Health remained above Marina's emergency line, but another Chaos-fueled activation risked turning the heat in his shoulders into fresh damage.
The knot contracted.
Yellow light traveled outward.
As the beat ended, Mike drove Mistcaller Fang through its center and activated Mana-fed Stormstrike. Ryan placed a Void Bolt in the outgoing root at the same instant. The current folded back into the organ instead of reaching the forest.
Marina’s authority forced the isolated roots to accept decay.
The knot blackened and collapsed.
The call stopped.
Predators at the far edge of the corridor hesitated. Some continued because blood remained; most turned aside once the organizing pulse vanished.
The party received event updates privately.
[Convergence Source Neutralized]
[Regional Data Node Preserved]
[Reinforcement Rate Reduced]
The human whistle came from behind them.
An arrow crossed the rise and struck Ryan’s Void Aegis. Its momentum disappeared, leaving it to fall at his feet. Three more followed from separate angles, aimed at Marina, Vex, and the hand Mike held against his burning sternum. Ryan widened the plane to catch them all. The fourth shaft stopped a handspan from Mike’s throat, and blood began running from Ryan’s nose before the arrow fell.
Four Circle fighters emerged from the northern trees. A bow user remained behind cover. A fire caster advanced beside two swordsmen, all wearing red strips marked with black daggers.
They had waited for the Sphere release.
Vex was already gone.
“Arin, source side,” Mike said. “Ryan, deny arrows. Marina, preserve your reserve.”
The first swordsman entered over a predator corpse, expecting Mike to be weak enough for a direct finish. Mike fixed Stormstep on the exact path he wanted and paid its cost with ordinary Mana, preserving Health after the threshold. He caught the man’s blade on a Stormvein Bracer and broke the wrist with his other hand.
The fire caster raised a staff. Ryan used Void Bolt to fold the forming flame into its focus. Wood burst. Heat consumed the caster’s sleeve instead of crossing the rise.
Marina’s Thornbind took the second swordsman around both ankles. He cut one vine, tore free of another, and hurled himself toward Ryan while the Voidcaster’s attention remained stretched across the arrows.
Marina’s expression changed.
The healer who had spent the corridor preserving blood and breath looked at a man choosing a wounded patient because he seemed easier to kill. Her staff struck the mud once. The roots around his remaining ankle thickened, climbed his body, and drove him sideways so hard his sword left his hand. A thorn punched through the gap below his breastplate and stopped beneath his ribs.
“You chose my patient,” Marina said.
The thorn moved once. The man went still before his body reached the mud.
The archer changed targets and aimed at Lumi.
Mike saw the bow turn. Rage opened a path toward the Conduit, promising enough power to erase the entire treeline. Marina’s charcoal suspension remained visible at her belt. Ryan tried to pivot the Aegis, but the plane stuttered after the first volley.
“Lumi, down.”
She folded as the string released. The arrow missed her spine and scored a red line across one shoulder before burying itself in the mud.
Pain flashed through the bond. Chaos answered it with an entire burning forest.
Mike kept the Conduit closed. The scale that killed one archer was already in the formation.
Vex appeared behind the archer and drove one Thornshadow blade through the drawing shoulder. His second cut opened the leg. The archer fell before another shot formed.
Ryan’s control left the broken fire caster exposed. Mike crossed the distance with Mana-fed Stormstep and ended the threat through a precise strike to the chest. Arin knocked the first swordsman against the Node and left him dazed but conscious.
Mike saw the body in Marina’s roots, saw the blood-dark thorn beneath its ribs, and understood that she had finished her own threat before he reached the caster. Marina was already beside Lumi. One sweep of green-gold light drew the torn skin together, cleared grit from the cut, and left only damp fur beneath her fingers.
Lumi tested the shoulder, bared her teeth toward the fallen archer, and sent Mike an image of the next bite she intended to deliver personally.
“Who sent the whistle?” Mike asked the swordsman Arin had thrown against the Node.
The trapped man spat into the mud. “The Circle sees every route. Kade said the storm would bleed itself dry.”
“Did he tell you what happened when the last ten believed him?” Ryan’s voice held no heat. Its stillness was colder.
The man’s eyes moved toward the blackened burn beneath Mike’s collar. “He said you would be worth more dead.”
A predator moved in the trees behind him. The remaining convergence had not disappeared, and interrogation exposed the formation to another wave.
Mike offered one choice. “Drop the red strip and walk west without a weapon. Or keep attacking.”
The swordsman dragged his good hand toward the blade beside him.
Arin ended him. Vex ended the wounded archer when she reached for a concealed knife. The Circle had committed four people to the ambush. None remained capable of carrying Kade’s report home.
The quiet exposed what the ambush had cost. Arin’s shield arm trembled from the corridor’s repeated impacts, and blood darkened one seam of the new plate where a cracked inner edge had bitten her. Vex had an arrow-graze along his ribs. Ryan wiped his face with a shaking hand and failed to stop the bleeding from his nose on the first attempt. Mike’s sternum felt hollow from the Sphere’s Health payment, while violet charge continued to crawl beneath both shoulders.
Marina moved through them with brutal speed. She closed Vex’s cut in one pass, sealed the break in Arin’s skin, and pressed two fingers beneath Ryan’s nose until green light repaired the ruptured vessels. Lesser wounds became finished work. Her attention lingered on Ryan long enough to confirm that the spatial strain lay in his channels rather than his brain, then shifted to Mike’s eyes.
“You kept it closed,” she said, glancing once toward the archer.
“You had the necessary scale.”
Marina looked at the man her thorns had killed. Hard satisfaction lived in her face—not pleasure in death, but certainty that when a threat chose her patient, she possessed the scale to end it. “Yes,” she said. “I did.”
Mike felt no satisfaction in the human deaths. He felt clarity. Kade used the same method on people and monsters: let someone else absorb the danger, then claim the weakened result.
The Data Node unlocked once the corridor quieted.
Mike placed one bracer against the black metal. The Node opened separate private maps for every eligible participant: three migrating clusters, their likely positions over the next twelve hours, and three human whistles followed by abrupt turns.
Vex found the traces of rendered fat and concentrated blood laid where Kade's people wanted the beasts to go. “They are not commanding them,” he said. “They are ringing a dinner bell.”
“One cluster is moving toward Stormbreak,” Mike said. “We meet it there.”
Marina cut a fist-sized piece from the dead root organ and sealed it beside her suspension. Ryan compared the approaching cluster with the distance to the ravine. Arin was already looking home.
The counters settled after the corridor’s kills were distributed by contribution.
[Cull the Overflow: 31/50]
[Optional Objective: 6/10]
Mike's Health remained reduced, his Mana below half, and the charcoal suspension ruled out another Chaos-fueled attack until he recovered. The Node had survived. The root-organ was dead. They knew how Kade moved the beasts.
They withdrew along the route Vex had hidden. Behind them, one distant humanoid signature peeled away before he could reach it. The ambush team had not been the only watcher.
Smart enemies returned with information. This one would tell Kade that the storm could bleed, respect a limit, and still take the field away from him.
