Chapter 52 — Pack Tactics

Green eyes arranged themselves into a formation.

Six pairs filled the descending tunnel at different heights, some near the floor and others moving along the root walls. A seventh watched from farther back, brighter and higher than the rest. The bodies came into view only when the pack advanced: lean predators the size of wolves, dark fur matted with moss, shoulder plates grown from bark, and living vines wrapped through muscle as if the Verdant Maw had braided its own tendons into them.

The System identified the nearest creature in Mike's private sight.

[Verdant Stalker — Level 11]
Traits: coordinated hunting · regeneration · terrain affinity

Arin withdrew to the narrow point they had chosen. Her patched shield covered most of the opening, while the root walls denied the Stalkers enough width to surround her. Mike took her right shoulder. Marina stood two paces behind with her staff grounded, Vex disappeared into the deeper shadow on the left, and Lumi crouched wherever she pleased because no plan had ever kept her still once teeth appeared.

“Seven,” Vex said. “The bright one hasn't committed.”

“It is coordinating the others,” Marina answered. “The vines in their legs tighten when it looks at them.”

Mike felt the same pattern through the roots. The pack was not sharing thoughts, but the lead predator gave tiny changes in posture and scent that the others obeyed. Killing it would break the cleanest coordination. Reaching it meant surviving the six bodies being used as a wall.

“We reduce the network before we touch its center,” he said. “Arin stops the first impact. Marina binds the second row. Vex, make one side believe it has an opening.”

“My specialty.”

The first Stalker rushed before his words had finished. Two followed at a measured distance, ready to strike whatever moved around the lead.

Arin planted her rear boot.

“Bulwark Stance.”

Her class settled through bone and shield in a visible shift of weight. The lead Stalker hit hard enough to crack bark beneath her heels, but she yielded only the distance needed to turn its skull aside. The second predator launched for the exposed rim of her shield.

Mike met it with Stormstrike.

Lightning wrapped his fist in a tight blue-white shell. Stormstrike supplied its fist-bound form and fixed the underside of the Stalker's jaw as its target. Chaos replaced Mana as the fuel, strengthening the current and opening several expressions inside the creature's armor. His knuckles hit beneath its jaw. Electricity crossed tongue, skull, and the wet vines along its spine, turning the leap into a violent roll across the floor.

The third Stalker ran along the wall.

Marina struck the ground. “Rootbind.”

Living fibers rose behind Arin and caught the predator in midlaunch. Marina did not try to overpower the whole body. She cinched one foreleg and the opposite rear leg, ruining its landing while preserving mana. The Stalker crashed shoulder-first against the wall.

Shade moved beneath it.

Vex appeared through Shade Slip with one dagger already angled into the gap behind its jaw. He cut once, withdrew before the regeneration closed around his blade, and let the dying body fall where it narrowed the approach.

The System recorded a reduction in the pack's coordination. The bright-eyed leader changed posture immediately.

“It learns,” Mike said.

“Then teach faster,” Arin replied.

The next assault came from both walls. One Stalker hooked its claws into the vertical roots and launched over Arin's shield. The other stayed low, aiming for her braced knee. She could stop either without breaking formation.

Lumi chose the high one.

Thunderstep Stage I turned her into a compact line of blue light. She struck the Stalker's face above Arin, twisted in the air, and drove a static discharge through both eyes. The predator missed Mike by half a meter and hit the wall with Lumi already springing away from its jaws.

Mike caught the low attacker with Chaotic Storm Pulse.

He kept the release close to his body. The burst crossed Arin's shield as a harmless skin of static and struck the Stalker through the wet roots beneath its paws, where branching current became a dozen simultaneous attacks. The beast lost every limb at once. Arin lifted the shield and brought Radiant Edge down through the joint where neck plates overlapped.

White-gold fire remained in the wound. The Stalker's regrowth reached for the severed tissue, touched Arin's light, and burned away.

“Radiance prevents the repair,” Marina said. “My Verdant control can also force it past useful growth. Ordinary lightning only delays it.”

Mike looked at the first creature he had punched. Its jaw had straightened, and new vines were pulling its head into alignment. “Then delay is my job. Arin makes the damage permanent.”

“I accept this division of labor.”

The leader sent all remaining Stalkers at once.

The corridor became bark, claws, and disciplined hunger. Arin used Shield Bash to turn one body into another, then stepped over the tangle so neither could recover cleanly. Vex allowed a third to chase him along the wall until it exposed its rear leg to Mike. Marina's Rootbind trapped the limb; Stormstrike broke the joint; Radiant Edge finished the kill.

The fourth reached Marina.

It had hidden behind its packmate's body, using the larger collision to mask a low rush around Arin's left. Marina saw it too late for Rootbind. She shifted her grip and thrust the iron-shod end of her staff into its mouth, but the creature's weight drove her backward.

Lumi bit into one ear and discharged. The Stalker shook her loose, buying Marina one breath.

“Verdant Lance.”

A hardened spear of living wood rose through the creature's ribs. The technique was an attack, not Restoration wearing a violent name; Marina forced Growth into a hostile body and gave it no shape that supported life. When the Stalker's own regeneration tried to close around the intrusion, the lance branched and tore the new tissue apart.

Mike reached it before the spear failed. His Stormstrike entered through the open mouth and ended the struggle.

Marina pulled her staff free. “I am beginning to resent being identified as the easy target.”

“Become less valuable,” Vex called.

“No.”

Three ordinary Stalkers lay dead. Two struggled with radiant wounds and ruined joints. The sixth waited beside the leader, protecting it rather than attacking. That choice confirmed intelligence beyond simple pack instinct.

The leader stepped forward.

Its shoulders rose a head above the others, with layered bark protecting the channels where Verdant light moved through its chest. Roots tightened under each paw before it placed weight, giving it traction the rest of the pack lacked.

Mike held his attack long enough to watch the nearest dead Stalker. The Alpha's presence sent a pulse through the floor, and thin feeder roots reached into the corpse's torn flank. They were not resurrecting it. They were stripping usable Verdant energy from a failed member and drawing that power back toward the leader.

“Corpses are feeding it,” he said. “Arin, burn the nearest channel. Marina, can you divert the other two without spending a full bind?”

Arin dragged Radiant Edge across the root entering the first corpse. White-gold fire traveled a handspan beneath the floor and severed the connection. Marina pressed her staff to the second, studied its rhythm for one pulse, and introduced a competing Growth command. The feeder divided into useless branches, each too thin to carry meaningful energy.

The Alpha recoiled before either attack touched its body. Its eyes shifted from Mike to Marina, then to Arin. The response proved that the leader felt the whole local network and chose targets according to who disrupted it, not who dealt the most visible damage.

“It wants Marina first now,” Mike said.

“A familiar professional hazard,” she replied.

Vex crouched beside a wall root and cut three shallow marks into the bark. “Then we advertise a better target.” He smeared blood from his own glove across the middle cut, crossed the corridor through Shade Slip, and left a second mark at shoulder height. The Alpha's nose tracked the scent while its eyes followed the shadow movement, forcing its two sensory systems to disagree.

Mike understood the trap. “When it commits to one, hit from the other.”

“Exactly. I knew there was a reason we kept you.”

[Verdant Stalker Alpha — Level 13]
Traits: enhanced regeneration · root command · pack reinforcement

The roots beneath Arin's boots rolled.

Her shield dropped a handspan as the floor stole her foundation. The Alpha crossed the distance in that instant and struck the center of the shield with its shoulder. Arin flew backward into Mike. Both hit the wall hard enough to empty his lungs.

The last healthy Stalker came for Marina while the line was open.

Vex intercepted with Shade Slip. His first dagger found the thin join behind its shoulder; the second missed when the beast twisted with impossible speed. Its teeth closed across his side and threw him into the roots.

Blood spread beneath his torn armor.

Marina moved before he landed. She did not fire Verdant Lance into the Alpha or waste Rootbind on the Stalker already turning away. She knelt beside Vex, pressed both hands against the wound, and invoked Restoration.

Green light cleaned splinters and dirt from the torn flesh before drawing the deepest edges together. Vex's bleeding slowed. The injury remained open enough to punish every movement, but he could breathe without blood bubbling between his teeth.

“That was healing,” Marina said tightly. “It cost what I was saving for control, so somebody else handles the floor.”

“My turn,” Mike answered.

The Alpha had expected the broken formation to retreat. Mike advanced instead. He used Stormstep to cross the shifting roots before they could rise, drove one foot against the wall, and changed direction above the Alpha's snapping jaws. His first Stormstrike cracked a plate beside its spine. The second sent current through the exposed Verdant channel beneath.

Lumi landed on the same wound. Her smaller charge resonated with his and interrupted the regenerative pulse before it could complete.

The Alpha bucked. Mike released rather than be carried into the ceiling, rolled across its flank, and hit the ground on the side opposite Arin.

That gave the leader two threats it could not face at once.

Arin had regained her feet. She tested the cracked shield, found it functional, and charged while the Alpha turned toward Mike. Shield Bash struck the injured shoulder. Radiant Edge followed into the split he had created, pouring white-gold light through a channel that had never been designed to carry it.

The Alpha screamed in the sound of green wood torn against its grain.

Roots erupted around Arin. Mike discharged Chaotic Storm Pulse into the floor before they could close, disrupting the growth without forcing Arin to absorb the full release. The pulse cost more mana than his precise attacks, but it left the Alpha exposed for Vex.

The rogue pushed away Marina's hand and stood despite the wound at his side.

“One pass,” Marina told him. “Then you return or I root you myself.”

“Romance survives.”

Shade Slip carried him beneath the Alpha's body. He cut the rear tendon Mike had marked with lightning and left his dagger embedded long enough to force the limb to bear weight around foreign steel. The Alpha twisted to catch him. Vex dropped flat, and Arin's shield met its jaw instead.

Mike saw the circuit open.

The bright channels in the Alpha's chest converged beneath the plate Arin had burned. Its root command, regeneration, and pack reinforcement all crossed the same knot. Lightning could follow that structure if he gave it enough force and a clean entry.

He waited until Lumi landed on the beast's blind side. Arin lowered her shield. Vex rolled clear. Marina's remaining Rootbind caught the damaged rear leg and kept the Alpha from turning.

Mike drove Stormstrike into the exposed knot.

Chaos made the current diverge through every connected channel. Blue-white light burst from the Alpha's eyes and beneath its claws. Root command failed first; the floor went still. Regeneration failed next. Arin's Radiant Edge entered the opened chest and cut the darkened core in two.

The Alpha collapsed.

Its last surviving packmate stared at the body, coordination stripped away. It chose flight. Lumi reached it before the turn completed, her Thunderstep driving it into the wall, and Vex ended it with a thrown dagger from where Marina had ordered him to remain seated.

The System waited until hostile movement stopped.

[Automatic Chaotic Stormbringer Growth Applied: +12]

The fixed distribution settled before Mike dismissed the notice. The gain steadied his breathing and restored a thin layer of energy, but it did not erase the bruise across his back or repair Vex's side. A level reinforced the people who survived; Marina still had to close what the teeth had opened.

“Fourteen,” he told them after closing his private notice.

Arin's attention returned from an interface only she could see. “Twelve.”

“Also twelve,” Marina said.

Vex raised one hand from the floor. “Twelve, and the System has once again declined to award points for elegance.”

The Stalker fight had exposed needs in several directions: better warning to read command signals, more resilience against an Alpha's impact, and finer control to keep Chaotic Storm Pulse narrow around allies. His Unranked class had answered only according to its established priorities. It strengthened Endurance and Arcane Control, but left Perception flat. The missing answer would have to come from Stormsense, observation, and formation discipline.

“Same automatic pattern?” Arin asked. She had not seen his pane; she read the way he tested his balance without searching for a newly altered stride.

“Same pattern. No pool. More force and storm structure, a little more physical reinforcement, nothing to Perception.”

“Good. Then I don't have to relearn how far you move because you doubled something while my back was turned. We train the warning gap instead.”

Vex raised one finger from the floor. “Counterpoint: it would be funny once.”

Marina's Restoration light moved across his side. “You are currently held together by my concentration. Consider whether this is the right time to campaign for surprises.”

He lowered the finger.

They made the battlefield safe before touching loot. Marina completed Vex's Restoration while Arin and Mike checked both directions. The System registered eight usable sections of hide, six intact fangs, and one Lesser Alpha Rootcore. They cut the hide and fangs free, wrapped them in Rootclaw fiber, and divided them into physical bundles that Vex and Arin lashed to their packs. Only the Rootcore entered Mike's soul-bound Inventory, after Marina inspected it and confirmed the pulsing Verdant knot was stable beside his damaged Guardian Shard.

Marina kept one narrow strip of hide outside storage and ran green light along its inner surface. The tissue contracted around the warmth, then relaxed without tearing. “It retains a weak repair impulse. With proper treatment, this could reinforce Arin's shield or become armor that closes shallow cuts in itself.”

Arin tested the bark brace across her existing crack. “Shield first. If this fails at the center, better armor only means I am well dressed when the next thing reaches you.”

“Agreed. The Rootcore may supply a stable anchor, but we don't consume it before we understand the dungeon's final mechanism.” Marina returned the hide to its bundle and looked at Mike. “That means the core remains loot, not an emergency battery you improvise with because it responds to lightning.”

Mike had been considering exactly that. “You remove all joy from discovery.”

“I schedule discovery for circumstances where we can survive the result.”

The exchange made the decision without slowing them. Arin owned the physical reinforcement plan, Marina owned treatment, Vex carried the lighter materials, and Mike retained the anomalous objects until their interactions could be tested. Their victory had become four separate advantages before they left the battlefield; none required him to spend the next hour tanning hides.

The descending passage ended at a ledge overlooking an immense cavern. Roots thick as buildings coiled through the dark, supporting shelves of luminous fungus and grown platforms. At their center, behind several overlapping walls of living wood, a golden-green light beat with the cadence they had felt since entering the Maw.

The System marked the region.

[Heartgrove Located]
Growth Locks Released: 2 / 4

Arin leaned on her shield and studied the routes below. “Two more locks, and then we deal with whatever owns that heartbeat.”

Marina's face reflected the green-gold light. Wonder entered it beside exhaustion, sharp enough that Mike understood why a dangerous place could become a calling.

He looked past the nearest platforms to the hidden center. Level fourteen settled through him, bringing the next threshold close enough to feel.

“Then we learn how its heart works,” he said. “After that, we decide how to stop it.”

Across a distance no mortal sense could measure, a root longer than a kingdom tightened around a sphere of amber light.

The attention moving through it did not see Mike's private notices, his level, or the name the System had given his soul. It perceived the Verdant Maw through living channels: a hunting pack removed, a regeneration knot broken by foreign radiance, and lightning that had traveled along growth without accepting its intended destination.

Countless lesser disturbances passed through the greater canopy and vanished without notice. This one repeated. The mortal storm learned the shape of every resistance placed before it, while the healer beside him turned Verdant law against itself without rejecting what it could become.

A fraction of the observer's regard settled on the Heartgrove.

The dungeon had two locks left to answer them. The power beyond it wanted to know what answer they would invent when the heart began to fight.
