Chapter 44 — Howl of the Broken Grove

13 min read Free access

The first duskhound lunged before the rest of the horde had finished deciding how to kill him.

Mike welcomed the mistake.

He stepped beside the fallen Groveplate Guardian and drove Stormstrike through the animal’s jaw. Blue-white current snapped its head sideways. The body struck the moss, rolled beneath one of the Guardian’s dead branches, and vanished under the feet of the creatures pressing in behind it.

The next two hounds stopped outside his reach.

They had watched the first die. Their quills rose as they paced apart, one drawing his attention while the other searched for the injured calf that had slowed him during the Guardian fight. Forest cats moved through the branches above them, lean bodies dark against the leaves. Behind the cats, tuskers shouldered between trunks with their heads low.

Each species should have hunted the others.

Chaos shimmered through the exposed root channels and gave them a common hunger.

Mike felt his own work in every unstable ripple. The final Doppelganger strike had killed the Guardian by driving divergence through the living network beneath the grove. With the creature dead, the abandoned channels continued offering the same impossible alternatives to every current that entered them. Local mana frayed. Instincts followed.

The result stood in a tightening circle around him.

His private status held the rest of the problem.

The Guardian had punctured his calf, bruised his ribs, and left both arms trembling from feedback. One restorative vial lay shattered beside the corpse, while contaminated sap had ruined the other. The event had sealed physical transfer of the registered materials at his belt. He had terrain, less than a third of his Mana, and the kind of attention normally reserved for a wounded animal.

Mike backed into the angle between the Guardian’s flank and a broken root shelf. The huge corpse blocked his right side. The shelf forced anything approaching from his left to climb over splintered wood or enter through a gap barely wide enough for a tusker.

That reduced a circle to two directions.

It would have to be enough.

The duskhounds moved together. One came high for his forearm while the other drove low toward his calf. Mike let the first close, turned his shoulder past the jaws, and slammed an ordinary elbow behind its ear. The second found his injured leg withdrawing and committed harder.

Stormstrike met it at the root shelf.

Lightning entered through the skull and grounded into wet wood. The hound folded, blocking the gap for the beat Mike needed to finish the first with a heel beneath the jaw.

A forest cat dropped from above.

Stormsense caught the charged air moving around its claws. He lurched forward rather than turning, let it land across his back, and threw himself against the Guardian. Fungal bark and dead muscle crushed the animal against his armor. Claws cut four hot lines across his shoulder before its grip failed.

Mike caught its foreleg, dragged it down, and placed it between himself and the tusker entering the left gap.

The tusker hit its fellow predator with a crack of bone. Mike released the cat, planted his sound leg, and shifted just far enough that the charge passed him. The tusker’s forward teeth buried themselves in the root shelf. Stormstrike hammered into the exposed shoulder joint and sent current along the wet sap inside it.

The leg collapsed. Its momentum carried it beneath the Guardian’s crown.

Mike moved before the next creature could use the opening.

Stormstep took him along the corpse’s spine in a short blue-white burst. He landed on bark slick with amber fluid, ducked a cat’s swipe, and kicked the animal into the press below. Three hounds snapped at it before remembering why they had gathered.

There was the second weakness.

The Chaos residue pulled them toward one place, but it had not made them an army. Pain, blood, and sudden motion could still redirect hunger. Mike began turning the horde against itself.

He broke a crownwood projection from the Guardian and threw it beyond the bottleneck. Two hounds tracked the movement. A cat landed between them, and one hound bit its rear leg. Their struggle disrupted the next tusker’s approach, forcing the larger beast to turn broadside. Mike Stormstepped behind the dead Guardian as it passed, then emerged to strike through the thinner hide beneath its jaw.

He spent Mana only where one discharge could purchase several seconds. The rest came from leverage, dead weight, and the collisions of animals too agitated to preserve their own lives.

For a time, the method worked.

The ground around the Guardian filled with bodies. Living creatures slipped on them, stumbled into the branch crown, and opened paths Mike could exploit. Lightning marked his movement in brief, controlled flashes instead of continuous brilliance.

The Guardian’s corpse still carried remnants of its old authority. When Mike struck its bark with the heel of his hand, amber light trembled beneath plates that no longer had a will to direct them. The nearby animals recoiled from the signal before the Chaos residue pulled them forward again.

He tested the response on the next wave.

A shallow Stormstrike into the corpse sent current across three plates instead of through an enemy. The dead armor rang like struck metal. Hounds approaching over the crown hesitated at the amber flare, while the two cats above them chose that instant to descend. Mike caught the first cat beneath its chest and redirected its fall into the hounds. The second found the shelf occupied, twisted in the air, and landed in front of a tusker that could no longer turn.

Impact carried all four animals into the bottleneck.

Mike drove crownwood through the tangle, using wood and body weight before spending another spark. A hound died beneath the tusker. The first cat escaped with a crushed hind leg and immediately attacked the second when their fungal manes touched. He withdrew while the collision kept moving without him.

One strike had turned the dead Guardian into a false command.

He tried it again after twelve breaths.

This time the hounds did not hesitate. Their eyes flashed with the same amber light as the plates, and the lead animal leapt toward the source instead of away from it. The grove had accepted his interference, carried it through the open channels, and returned a different answer.

Mike barely cleared the crown before three sets of jaws closed where his hand had been. He killed the first hound with a descending knee, stunned the second against a plate, and let the third chase him along the Guardian’s flank. The creature anticipated his turn and cut across the corpse rather than following his path.

Adaptive territory. Even dead, the Guardian’s network converted repetition into instruction.

“One use per idea,” Mike said, breath harsh. “Understood.”

The rule changed how he spent every remaining advantage. A route that worked once became suspect. A feint could not be repeated from the same side. He crossed high after escaping low, used the root shelf as cover after treating it as a weapon, and fed small movements into the horde until each species committed to an answer that belonged to the previous exchange.

The grove kept learning. So did he.

Attrition still favored the forest.

Each kill cost breath and blood. A hound’s claws reopened his calf when he pivoted too slowly. A cat caught his left forearm and tore through the sleeve before he drove it away. The next tusker struck him with the side of its head instead of the teeth; the glancing blow threw him against the corpse hard enough to make his bruised ribs grind.

[Health: 39%]
[Mana: 18%]

The ring beyond Stormsense had barely thinned.

Mike wiped blood from his palm and examined the movement rather than the number. Small predators reached him first because they could slip between bodies. The tuskers arrived in waves, delayed by trees and one another. The cats waited for him to commit at ground level. Every species operated on a different rhythm.

He could control the rhythm if he kept moving.

The next hound entered the gap. Mike feinted Stormstrike, made the animal flinch away from a discharge that never came, and buried the crownwood point beneath its front leg. He pivoted the impaled body into a second hound, then stepped over both as a cat descended.

Stormstep carried him onto the root shelf. The cat landed where he had been. A tusker’s charge arrived half a heartbeat later and crushed it against the Guardian.

The clean sequence almost made him miss the quilled beast coming across the corpse.

Its teeth closed around his right forearm. Quills drove through his coat where its chest struck him, and its weight pulled him off the shelf. Mike landed on one knee among dead hounds with the animal still attached.

He forced Stormstrike past its ordinary draw.

Lightning filled the creature’s skull until bone cracked beneath his arm. The hound released him and fell twitching, but the recoil burned from his fingers to his shoulder. His hand stopped closing properly.

[Health: 27%]
[Mana: 10%]

Three cats began their descent.

Mike kicked the dead hound into the first, ducked beneath the second, and took the third across the back. Claws tore deeper than the earlier wound. He seized its fungal mane, pulled it over his shoulder, and drove its head into the root shelf. A tusker entered the gap while he was still bent.

Stormstep failed to answer. Low Mana met the damage in his reopened channels, and the movement pattern collapsed before it carried him anywhere.

Mike threw himself sideways. One tusk scored his ribs, opening armor and skin without entering the body. The beast struck the Guardian and tore its own tooth loose. Mike rolled beneath a branch, came up beside its damaged face, and put his last clean Stormstrike through the eye.

His Mana dropped into single digits.

The horde adjusted.

Hounds stopped feeding on wounded competitors. Cats spread across the canopy until every escape angle carried claws. Three tuskers aligned beyond the bottleneck, the first ready to clear the bodies so the others could enter on its wake. The residue was teaching them through repeated failure, or their strongest instincts had finally overcome the disorder.

Either answer ended with Mike buried under more mass than he could evade.

He climbed onto the Guardian’s chest and looked across the grove.

The territorial channels formed a black-green web beneath scorched moss. Chaos traveled along them as faint violet fractures, reaching every creature pulled into the event. He had treated the residue as the cause of the horde. It was also the only structure connecting the entire battlefield.

Storm Pulse had always pushed energy outward from his body. Lightning followed conductive routes. Chaos found alternatives when a route tried to settle.

The grove had already built him a circuit.

Using it would mean feeding a strained skill into the same instability that created the event. The backlash was impossible to calculate. Continuing as he was made calculation irrelevant; the next coordinated wave would kill him before he ran out of Mana.

Mike planted both feet on the dead Guardian and drew the remaining current inward.

The nearest hounds lowered themselves. Cats gathered above. The lead tusker drove forward, clearing corpses from the gap with its head.

Storm Pulse formed inside Mike as a tight ring of lightning.

He pushed Chaos into it.

The familiar pattern resisted. Its channels had been refined during the Awakening to preserve structure, and the surrounding residue tried to split every path that structure offered. Mike held both forces together long enough for the System to recognize that the old technique could no longer express what he demanded.

[Skill Evolution Available: Storm Pulse]
The skill has reached the limit of its current pattern.

[Integrate Environmental Divergence?]

Mike accepted.

The skill opened.

[Skill Evolved: Storm Pulse → Chaotic Storm Pulse]
Technical Rank: F
Rarity: Rare
Type: Active
Effect: Release an omnidirectional storm discharge. The skill supplies radial form and hostile targeting; Chaos fuel may increase power and controlled divergence within the activation. Damage is greatest at close range. Lesser targets may suffer disorientation as the pulse disrupts sensory and mana patterns.
Limits: Overextension may cause severe channel backlash.

The lead tusker crossed the final paces.

Mike released the skill.

White-blue lightning erupted through the grove. Chaotic Storm Pulse supplied the radial attack and held the hostile network as its target. Its raw Chaos-fueled expression did not expand as a smooth ring; the front divided into branching shells across roots, wet earth, bone, and living mana. Bolts entered the exposed territorial network and rose again beneath creatures beyond his ordinary reach.

The first tusker died with its forelegs still driving. Hounds convulsed where current crossed their spines. Cats fell from the canopy in trails of burning fungus. The second shell struck farther out, weaker but stranger, forcing animals to turn toward threats that existed only as scrambled impulses.

Mike stood at the center until his body could no longer distinguish the power leaving him from the nerves carrying it.

Then every channel locked.

He hit the Guardian’s chest on both knees. His vision vanished, returned in white fragments, and settled on a grove transformed into black roots and rising smoke.

Dozens of creatures lay still. Those beyond the killing radius staggered between trees, biting at empty air or fleeing routes that no longer contained pursuit. The remaining horde broke with them. Instinct finally found an instruction stronger than the residue.

Escape.

The event resolved while Mike fought to remain conscious.

[Tutorial Event Completed: Howl of the Broken Grove]
Hostile Creatures Defeated: Contribution consolidated
[Experience Awarded]

[Level Up: 12 → 13]
Attribute Gain: +12 automatic Chaotic Stormbringer growth applied.
Minor resource recovery applied. Active wounds remain.

Strength returned in a narrow wave. Bleeding slowed along his back and calf. His ribs still hurt, and the new energy found his mana pathways closed against it.

A second verdict followed.

[Trait Acquired: Storm-Hardened Frame]
Technical Rank: F
Rarity: Uncommon
Type: Passive
Effect: Repeated survival of storm recoil has reinforced your body’s tolerance for lightning backlash and high-impact movement. This trait reduces ordinary recoil.
Limits: It does not negate channel damage or unsafe overextension.

The warning arrived before he could appreciate the gain.

[Status Applied: Overloaded Channels]
Mana Regeneration: Disabled
Active Skill Use: Disabled
Damage Received: +100%
Duration: 12:00:00

His Mana read zero. Health hovered at nine percent after the level’s limited recovery.

Mike tested his fingers and received no spark. His channels felt packed with hot glass, too damaged to carry even a harmless current.

“Worth understanding,” he whispered. “Never doing it casually.”

The local seal around his registered materials dissolved with the event.

[Local Threat State Resolved]
Disposition: Registered Groveplate materials are eligible for soul-bound transfer.
[Deferred Event Reward Recorded]

Mike opened the ten-slot Inventory he had earned after the earlier Verdant victory and reunion. The Groveplate Core, bound stack of bark plates, and crownwood fragment still existed physically at his belt and beside the corpse; registration had never made them weightless. He touched each bundle and deliberately transferred it into an open slot. Their weight vanished only after the System confirmed the move.

The deferred reward appeared as a sealed map fragment. He left it unopened. Whatever it revealed would remain true after he stopped being vulnerable to an angry squirrel.

Standing required both hands against the Guardian. Walking required a refusal to accept the alternative.

He chose the ravine by broken branches and the remembered angle of the sun, moving away from the routes the surviving horde had taken. Without Stormsense or Stormstep, the forest expanded around him. Every shadow became a distance he had to cross on damaged legs.

Turning toward the ravine while the event was active would have given him more shields, more blades, and Marina’s healing. It also would have brought every creature converging on the residue to three wounded companions who had already fought Kade’s people. Mike had chosen the corpse because it narrowed the horde around one body. Now that the pull had broken, reaching the others became the only objective worth what remained of him.

He tore a strip from the least-burned section of his coat and bound the calf tightly enough to slow the blood without numbing his foot. The claw wounds across his back were beyond his reach. He settled for wedging folded cloth under the torn armor so each step did not pull them wider.

Mike counted trees instead of steps. Reach one. Breathe. Choose the next. The method carried him beyond the scorched grove and into quieter woods, where lesser creatures smelled the blood on him but also smelled what had burned behind it.

His calf failed near a low ridge. He caught himself on a trunk, slid to the roots, and opened the party channel through the System interface. The function required no mana, only that he had come back within its limited reach.

Alive. Guardian and horde cleared. Level thirteen.
Mana zero. Skills locked for twelve hours. Badly wounded and moving toward the ravine.
If I stop answering, follow the fox before you follow the crater.

He sent the message and rested his head against the bark.

The reply arrived before his eyes could close.

Hold your direction. We are extending the perimeter. Lumi is coming.

Through the bond, faint and stretched by distance, Mike felt six familiar sparks turn toward him at once.

He pushed himself upright before she had to find him lying down.
