Chapter 20 — Paths Converging

Mike returned to himself by following Lumi's heartbeat.

It rested against his sternum, quick and warm beneath layers of pain. Her muzzle was tucked below his chin, and all six tails covered him in a living mantle of pale fur. Beyond her, the sky held the muted silver of late morning, framed by the dark pillars surrounding the Trial of Awakening.

“Michael Storm,” Marina said. “Open your eyes.”

He did. Green light hovered above her palm, close enough to illuminate the dried blood along his side without sinking into the knot beneath his core. Arin knelt behind his shoulders with one hand ready to restrain him, while Vex watched the forest from the nearest pillar.

“Name?” Marina asked.

“Michael Storm.” His throat scraped around the answer. “Mike.”

“Where are you?”

“Outside the Trial of Awakening.” Memory returned in broken flashes: a shadow wearing his stance, a hand offered beneath his blade, black lightning crossing into him. The new space inside his class answered the recollection with a cold pulse. “The echo is bound. It became Chaotic Doppelganger.”

Arin's grip eased without leaving his shoulder. “That matches what you told us before you collapsed.”

“How long?”

“Twenty-three minutes,” Vex said from the pillar. “Long enough for me to decide your new habit of swallowing enemies needs rules.”

Mike tried to sit. Lumi placed both front paws against his chest and conveyed an opinion strong enough to stop him before Marina had to.

“Your cuts are closed,” Marina said. “The blood loss is controlled. I did not put healing mana into the new structure, your channels, or anything else I could not identify. You will rise after I finish checking whether all the thoughts in your head belong there.”

“That could take years.”

“Then give me the short version.”

Mike closed his eyes and found the boundary he had forced into being. His memories remained his own, each carrying weight the echo had never understood: fear beneath the Nightstalker's claws, Sael's final request, Lumi choosing to shield him while already injured. Beside those memories waited an archive of motion stripped of meaning, folded into the skill like dark glass waiting to receive a reflection.

He touched the archive with intent. Something within it turned toward him without attempting to take his place.

“Separate,” he said. “It is there, but it is separate.”

Marina watched his pupils, breathing, and the subtle current moving beneath his skin. “Then keep it that way. If you lose time, hear thoughts you did not choose, or feel the boundary change, you tell us immediately.”

The System chimed before he could answer.

Gold-edged lines opened across his private vision, their brightness reflected faintly in Lumi's eyes without revealing the words to her or anyone else.

[Path Advancement Recognized]
A Unique skill was authored through demonstrated intent, risk, and compatible class expression. Experience threshold completed.

[Level Up: 7 → 8]
Attribute Gain: 12 attribute points applied through established class-growth distribution.
[Expanded Status Interface Unlocked]

Warmth entered him with the advancement. It tightened the last fragile seals across his lacerations, restored strength to muscles emptied by the convergence, and eased the sharpest edge of his fatigue. The fractured rib remained bound beneath Marina's work, while the ache through his channels settled deeper instead of vanishing.

The expanded interface unfolded into layers he could call or dismiss by attention. Mike ignored everything except the immediate summary.

[Status: Michael Storm]
Race: Human · Unranked
Class: Chaotic Stormbringer · Unique · Mythic-grade
Level: 8

Resources
Health: 79%
Mana: 31%
Stamina: 42%
Conditions: stabilized rib fracture; moderate channel strain, improving; identity-convergence aftereffect, stable; sealed lacerations, left upper arm and right side

Chaotic Doppelganger waited behind the summary with its rank still shown as a question mark and every practical detail unproven.

Mike dismissed the panes. “Level eight. Seventy-nine percent Health. The rib and channels are still listed as active conditions.”

Marina nodded once. “That matches what I can observe. Your resource recovery is better than it was a minute ago. Your body is still injured.”

“Understood.”

“Say it as though the words reached you.”

“I will not spend everything testing the new skill.”

“Acceptable.” She helped Lumi step off his chest, then offered Mike her forearm. “Sit first. Standing can wait another minute.”

Arin moved to the edge of the low stone shelf they had chosen for shelter. “Since one of us changed, we confirm the rest before anyone enters the Trial. My interface still shows Level Three.”

Marina checked her own private pane. “Level Four.”

Vex did the same without turning away from the tree line. “Four, with no special reward for guarding people who make experimental soul contracts.”

Mike eased upright. “Eight. Same roles unless one of you wants to change them.”

“You strike,” Arin said. “I hold and direct the line. Marina controls and keeps us alive. Vex finds what wants to remain unfound.”

“And Lumi chooses where she fights,” Mike added.

The luminfox climbed onto the stone beside him and raised her sore left forepaw with exaggerated dignity. Her singed tails had regained some of their light, though fatigue still softened the bond whenever she moved too quickly.

Arin glanced at the silver boundary behind them. “The Trial requires us to enter alone. Until someone takes the first step, we remain four candidates and one independent accomplice watching the same ground. Afterward, whoever waits holds this position for the others.”

It was an operational agreement, not a System-bound party. Mike preferred knowing exactly what held them together: repeated choices made where every choice cost something.

Vex lifted one hand.

The humor left his face. He pointed toward two dead twigs he had crossed beneath the northern pillar. Both had rolled apart, though nothing visible stood near them.

Stormsense spread through the clearing. The Trial boundary filled one side of Mike's awareness with folded silver distance. Along the other, shallow pulses traveled beneath the soil in sets of four, halted, then advanced again.

“Something is using the roots to hide its steps,” he said.

T-Guide_02471 rotated above the stone shelf. Amber rings swept the ground and returned stained with green. “Verdant contamination detected. Mobile organism approaching from the northwest. Estimated threat exceeds three local baseline predators.”

Arin drew her curved sword. “Vex, bring us its shape. Marina, keep the shelf behind me. Mike, stay off the new skill until we know what it costs.”

Vex vanished around the outer pillar. A heartbeat later, one of his daggers flashed between the trees and cut a dangling vine. The severed length struck the ground.

The earth lunged after it.

A wolf-shaped creature burst from beneath a mat of roots, scattering black soil across the clearing. It stood nearly as high as Arin's chest, but fur survived only in ragged bands along its gray flanks. Half-grown roots rose from its spine like the ribs of an unfinished cage, each one pulsing with green light drawn from a swollen knot behind its shoulders.

The beast landed on the cut vine and crushed it beneath claws webbed in wood. Its nostrils opened in vertical seams, tasting the air until its green gaze locked on Mike.

Verdant residue still clung to his channels. The new Doppelganger added a darker echo of the same signature.

“It came for the imprint,” Mike said.

“Then let it cross me first.” Arin struck her bracer with the flat of her blade.

The wolf charged her. Roots erupted behind every stride, anchoring and releasing fast enough to hurl its body forward. Arin waited until its jaws opened, then stepped inside the arc and met its cheek with her bracer.

The collision drove her back two paces. Marina planted her staff behind Arin's heel and raised a curved blue ward across both of them. The wolf's second snap hit light instead of flesh, spreading cracks through the barrier without breaking it.

Vex appeared at the beast's rear quarter. His first dagger severed a thin root along its spine. The second struck the green knot and skidded away from crystal hidden beneath bark.

Three tendrils whipped toward him. He slipped under one, cut the next, and took the third across his coat hard enough to throw him beside a pillar.

“Armor under the knot,” he called as he rolled upright. “Roots tighten when it turns left.”

Arin heard the opening. She leaned into Marina's ward, allowed the wolf to commit its weight against the blue curve, then dropped beneath it as Marina dissolved the spell. The creature stumbled through empty resistance.

Arin's sword entered between its ribs. Her cut opened fur and bark together, but green fibers caught the blade before it reached the heart.

The wolf twisted left.

Its roots drew tight exactly as Vex warned, hauling the wound closed around Arin's steel and trapping her inside reach of its jaws.

Mike moved. Stormstep could carry him there first and leave him arriving beside the beast's jaws. Chaotic Pulse would hit everyone crowded around it. He needed another attacker, one able to inherit his intention without sharing his position.

He opened the new knot.

“Chaotic Doppelganger.”

Mana vanished in a single cold pull. Black-blue lightning spilled from Mike's shadow and rose into a human outline beside the wolf. It carried his height, the suggestion of his reinforced garments, and a blade made from condensed stormlight without reproducing the crack in his real weapon.

[Mana: 31% → 15%]

The double faced Mike for half a heartbeat, waiting at an angle he would never have chosen for himself. He gave it one intent: free Arin from the roots.

It moved before he supplied a method.

Stormstep burst through its legs as dark lightning. The Doppelganger crossed behind the wolf, ignored the armored knot, and cut through the root binding Arin's blade instead. Its choice preserved the weapon and forced the creature to turn away from her.

Arin ripped her sword free. “Useful trick.”

The wolf struck backward with its unfinished cage. Two roots passed through the Doppelganger's shoulder, tearing away black-blue fragments that returned as pain beneath Mike's core. The double remained coherent and drove its storm blade into the creature's rear leg.

Mike felt its next decision forming. It intended to imitate his familiar follow-up and discharge power through the embedded weapon. The skill answered his direction without requiring exact control, yet the thought carried a dangerous eagerness inherited from the echo.

“Hold,” he commanded.

The Doppelganger froze. Lightning gathered through it anyway, shaking the outline as instability spread from the damaged shoulder. Semi-independent did not mean harmless, and expiration was approaching faster than the System's description had implied.

Mike ran toward the wolf. Vex slashed both tendons behind its forward leg while Marina wrapped blue light around the crystal knot, blinding its connection to the surrounding roots. Arin wrenched the creature's head aside with her bracer and opened the line to its neck.

The wolf tore free of the Doppelganger's blade and sprang toward Marina.

Mike met it halfway.

“Stormstrike.”

He drove his fist beneath its jaw. White-blue lightning entered through fur, branched down the creature's throat, and burst from the green seams along its spine. The armored knot flashed once as the current found every severed root at the same time.

The wolf collapsed at Mike's feet. Momentum carried him into its shoulder, and one rigid tendril raked across his hip before the body stopped moving.

Behind it, the Doppelganger lost cohesion.

Mike turned his intent upward. The double obeyed, leaping clear of the group an instant before its outline broke into a web of black-blue arcs. They cracked harmlessly across the air above the clearing, then folded back into the skill as cold static.

A chime reached Mike. Arin, Marina, and Vex each glanced toward empty air at the same instant, then confirmed that an identical notice had reached their own interfaces.

[Evolved Wolf Defeated]
[Experience Distributed Across Contributing Candidates]

No one reported a level.

Mike braced both hands on his knees. The Doppelganger's borrowed Stormstep had consumed mana through the same variable draw as its body, and its damaged expiration left him with the sensation of a limb waking from numbness.

“Twelve percent remaining,” he said after checking. “Summoning took sixteen. Its Stormstep and my strike drew from what remained, and the interface does not separate those costs yet.”

“It chose the binding root,” Arin said. She cleaned green sap from her sword without taking her eyes off him. “You told it the goal, and it found an approach.”

“It also tried to discharge after I wanted it stopped.”

“Then your next test begins with commands before combat,” Marina said. She knelt beside his hip and cut away the strip of cloth caught by the tendril. “You promised not to spend everything.”

“I retained twelve percent.”

“That defense will improve when twelve percent is enough to keep you alive.” Her spell closed the shallow cut, then ended before its warmth reached his core. “Sit.”

This time, Mike obeyed before Lumi could push him.

Vex cut two clean crystal splinters from the dead wolf while Arin dragged the tainted carcass beyond their position. Then the silver circle held quiet for two hours. Marina renewed Mike's rib binding, Lumi slept against his side, and the resources his first Doppelganger had consumed returned by degrees.

[First Selection — Time Remaining: 36:41:52]

Resources
Health: 86%
Mana: 68%
Stamina: 73%
Conditions: stabilized healing rib fracture; moderate channel strain, improving; identity-convergence aftereffect, stable

Arin stood when he did. “Ready?”

“Ready enough to learn what the Trial thinks I lack.”

Marina checked her own reserves, then nodded. Vex had found no path around the staircase.

T-Guide_02471 floated between Mike and the first step. Its cracked shell turned once toward the monolith, and a soft blue band circled its center.

“Candidate arrival at an Awakening threshold completes this phase of provisional field guidance,” it said. “This unit is prohibited from entering or transmitting information into the active domain. Recall is mandatory before trial activation. Reassignment remains possible if Tutorial conditions require field guidance after Awakening.”

Mike had expected another rule. The pause inside it arrived differently. The damaged orb had witnessed his worst experiments, objected to nearly all of them, and remained when its predictions offered little comfort.

“Then record this phase properly,” he said. “T-Guide_02471 completed the assignment. Candidate survived long enough to become a different category of problem.”

Blue light brightened along the crack in its shell. “Assessment accepted. Continued survival is recommended, Candidate Storm.”

“I will treat that as your most ambitious instruction.”

The orb rose above the pillars. A narrow aperture opened in the air and received it in a fold of silver light. Before the opening closed, one final line crossed Mike's private interface:

[Guide Recalled: Field Access Suspended Pending Eligible Reassignment]

Its absence left one less quiet witness hovering at his shoulder.

Lumi approached the boundary beside him. When her paw touched the silver ripple, the Trial answered with a private warning Mike read aloud: a bonded companion would count as outside assistance unless separately admitted by the Awakening.

Anger flared through the bond. Lumi scratched one bright line across the stone, then looked from the staircase to Marina. She understood the choice before Mike shaped words around it.

“I need you alive when I return,” he said. “The others will need someone who can sense what the boundary hides.”

Lumi pressed her forehead against his palm. Warm recognition passed between them, fierce enough to survive a closed domain. Then she stepped back of her own accord and sat beside Marina, tails gathered around her healing forepaw.

Arin offered Mike her braced forearm. “We hold the clearing. Whoever finishes first waits for the rest.”

He clasped it, then Marina's hand and Vex's wrist in turn.

“See you after the Trial,” Mike said.

The staircase waited within its silver circle. Every rune on the monolith had turned toward the same black-blue hue as the new knot beneath his core, as though the Awakening had spent their rest preparing an answer specifically for him.

Mike recovered his cracked blade and crossed the boundary alone. He placed one foot on the first step.

The monolith awakened.

White light consumed him.
