[Collapse: 23:41]
Mike entered the first failing corridor at thirty-nine percent Health, eighty-five percent Mana, and twenty-four percent Stamina.
The numbers were better than the body carrying them. Grave Tax had left his legs hollow. The channel stabilizer had expired, exposing a deep ache from wrist to sternum. Every breath pulled against bruised ribs, and dust was already replacing air beneath the ceiling.
Three point seven kilometers remained between him and the gate.
He ran.
The first section had been the Throne Vault approach. Without Aethran, its bone spikes stayed down, but the floor no longer stayed level. Stone plates tipped toward a widening crack. Mike crossed them in short strides and used Stormstep only when a gap exceeded what his wounded thigh could clear.
Stormstep drew ordinary Mana for movement. He invoked no attack skill and supplied no Chaos. The dungeon itself was dying; adding variance to collapsing architecture would have been generosity toward the wrong side.
[Collapse: 20:08]
The Ossuary Court came apart around him.
The dead white tree had fallen across the central avenue. Names still glowed faintly through the fountain circuit, but whole sections vanished beneath dropping bone walls. Mike climbed the trunk, crossed its frozen branches, and placed the first retreat marker on the far arch. Silver resin spread into a directional arrow.
If the external watch entered after him, they needed evidence that he had passed this point alive. If he failed to emerge, the markers would tell them how far recovery remained possible before the route ceased to exist.
The floor dropped under his left boot.
He caught the fountain rim with both hands. The new Crownshard Bracers tightened around his forearms as stone struck them. His injured shoulder screamed. Below, the civic circuit broke into darkness one line at a time.
Mike hauled himself up, rolled away, and felt Stamina fall into single digits.
He opened the sealed consumable packet.
Mike drank one tonic and one health draught.
[Consumables Used]
Health draughts remaining: 1
Stamina tonics remaining: 1
Warmth moved into muscle and torn tissue. The tonic gave his stride back; the draught stopped the calf from reopening with every step. Neither touched the channel ache.
He crossed the Court before the fountain disappeared.
[Collapse: 14:32]
The chain gallery had become a vertical machine shaking itself apart. One bridge remained attached at both ends, twisted almost ninety degrees. The cracked bell hung below it, rising whenever the central chain shortened and dropping when a counterweight failed.
Mike could spend minutes finding another route. He did not have minutes.
He stepped onto the side of the surviving bridge and ran along the linked edge. Chains rolled beneath his boots. The bell climbed toward him. Stormsense mapped its motion through iron vibration, letting him jump before the cracked lip sheared through the bridge.
He stormstepped in midair.
Mana dropped. Distance folded. His hands struck the far balcony while the bridge vanished behind him in a roar of links and stone.
The Thunderstep Boots found purchase first. The damaged left boot slipped, recovered, and carried him through the arch.
Mike placed the second marker.
[Collapse: 09:17]
The reliquary rooms had lost their walls. Ilyra's models lay broken open, showing tiny river channels inside the clay. Mike kept the last model in Inventory and left the rest to the stone. He could mourn architecture after he survived it.
A ceiling slab fell across the Procession Hall.
The impact buried the direct route under more mass than even his new Strength could shift quickly. The map offered a secondary path through the Remembrancer's naming chamber, then up one of the bronze voice tubes.
The tube had been built to carry sound, not a man.
Mike reached the circular chamber with seven minutes left and found half the bronze openings crushed. He tore the rim from RIVER-KEEPER, widened the masonry around it, and forced himself into a shaft barely broad enough for his shoulders.
Dust filled his mouth. Beyond Basic Needs did nothing for oxygen. Mike pulled air in shallow measures, braced boots and elbows against bronze, and climbed.
The shaft angled upward through the wall. Each movement scraped the new Mantle and drove rib pain deeper. Behind him, the naming chamber collapsed with a sound the tube carried directly into his bones.
[Collapse: 04:03]
Mike reached a junction where seven voice channels crossed. The route marker showed the gate above and left, but the bronze tube narrowed there.
He could not fit.
He drove both Crownshard Bracers against the seam and pushed. Black-iron lines in the Mythic equipment reinforced his hands; Strength opened the joint a fraction; stone resisted the rest.
Mike invoked Stormstrike on the bronze seam and let Chaos replace Mana as its fuel.
Chaotic Conduit charged the cost directly to Health. The skill kept its target and burst the seam outward in white-blue violence. The confined sound struck like a hammer inside his skull, but the opening widened enough to crawl through.
He used the last retreat marker at the junction. Anyone following would see which channel he had broken.
[Collapse: 01:52]
Cold rain appeared ahead.
Mike crawled toward it on hands and knees, shoved through falling mortar, and crossed the gate as the Core Dungeon failed behind him.
The threshold sealed with no dramatic flare. The black arch folded inward, stone becoming dull forest rock, and the last cracked note ended beneath the rain.
Mike tried to stand.
[Tutorial Closure: 5d 23h 44m]
Arin caught him under one arm before the attempt became a fall. The Ridgeforged Bulwark was strapped across her back, its repaired face dark with rain. Vex seized Mike's other side. Ryan was already signaling toward the next route marker, where Rook and Dane waited with a carrying frame.
Lumi struck Mike's shin with her shoulder, then pressed close enough that all six tails brushed his leg. Her relief came through their bond as warm static and immediate irritation.
Marina arrived last because she had stopped three paces away to read the whole body before touching it.
"Look at me," she said.
Mike did.
Her eyes tracked his pupils, breath, stance, and the tremor in his hands. Then her attention went past the visible injuries. Mike felt her Restoration aspect move through him as a diagnostic presence, distinguishing torn tissue from depleted life reserve, bruised ribs from storm channels, ordinary frost burn from the bright ache left by repeated Chaos-fueled activations.
"Right fingers were numb," he said before she asked. "Sensation came back."
"Good. The nerve is conducting. Your channels are inflamed but structurally continuous." Satisfaction sharpened her face. Her attention lingered on the foreign channel architecture with the appetite of someone who had found the next frontier. "The flesh is mine. The channels are a separate problem."
Marina planted one heel in the wet earth.
Deep Roots answered.
Fine green lines spread from beneath her boot into the slope, caught the living network under grass and pine, and returned as an anchor steady enough that the collapsing gate's last tremor could not move her hands. Verdant Conduit branched from her palms across Mike's body. One strand entered the torn calf. Another followed the strained thigh. Others sank beneath the frost burn, the opened arm, and the bruised tissue around his ribs.
She drew one breath and invoked Blooming Resurgence.
The field entered Mike as ordered reconstruction. Blood vessels sealed before new tissue could trap bleeding beneath skin. Torn muscle fibers aligned with the movement they would need on the walk home. Frost-damaged cells sloughed away in a green shimmer and were replaced from healthy margins. The bruising around his ribs drained into harmless heat while the bone beneath thickened along two hairline fractures he had not known were there.
Pain changed so quickly his body failed to keep up. Mike's Health climbed from thirty-nine percent into the upper sixties as physical damage stopped consuming it. His Stamina remained low. The luminous ache in his channels did not move, and closing flesh could not restore Health already charged by Chaotic Conduit for his Chaos-fueled activations.
Marina's jaw tightened as she carried the spell through the last reconstruction. Sweat appeared along her hairline despite the cold rain. When she lifted her hands, Mike's cuts had become pale new lines, the calf no longer bled, the thigh could bear weight, and the frost burn looked like tender new skin rather than dead tissue.
She examined her work with fierce, private pleasure. "Good. Your body remembered the correct answer."
Mike flexed his leg. The muscle obeyed. "That was the first treatment?"
"That was the physical treatment." Her smile showed a trace of teeth. "I did not take a Legendary Restoration class to negotiate with bruises."
Then she returned to command before pride could become delay. "Arin, keep his left side unloaded anyway. The repair is new. Vex, open the field roll. Ryan, reduce effective weight on descents without shaking him apart."
Ryan looked toward the carrying frame and the wet slope beyond it. "Rook and Dane still set the pace. I can smooth the vertical load transitions."
"Do that."
Roots rose beneath the carrying frame and wove themselves through its lash points, forming a living suspension that flexed when one end lifted. Growth supported the Restoration rather than replacing it: Mike's rebuilt tissue would not have to absorb every jolt before it matured.
"Your channels are stable and overused," Marina said. "I can reduce the secondary inflammation after transport. The Chaos-bright channel architecture itself lies outside my Restoration. Not yet."
Her gaze stayed on the Chaos-bright pathways, already measuring the distance between not yet and the first experiment that might change it.
Mike almost made a joke. Her next sentence arrived before he found one.
"You cleared it. Now let us complete the victory by getting you home."
Home was part of the victory. He nodded.
The group lowered him onto the frame. He could have walked after the Resurgence; using that fact to waste the repair on a rough return would have been an insult to everyone standing around him. Arin inspected both bracers before allowing his hands to rest, then touched the new black-iron lines with one careful thumb.
"Later," she said.
"There's a lot of later in those."
"Then survive the trip."
Rook and Dane lifted. Ryan's field took part of the load, Vex moved ahead to check the route, and Lumi stayed beside Mike rather than ranging into the trees. Marina walked at his shoulder with two fingers on his pulse whenever the ground grew rough.
They carried him home beneath the rain. Mike remained conscious. He did not need sleep, but stillness let muscle repair and kept the channels from receiving fresh strain. Familiar markers passed above him. For once, progress meant allowing other people to bear weight he had no reason to carry alone.
Helena met the frame inside Stormbreak's gate.
She took in Mike, the Mantle, the bracers, and the core group returning around him. Her first order sent Rook and Dane toward food and dry clothes. Only then did she stand beside Marina's treatment table.
"Permanent?" Helena asked.
"Aethran is dead," Mike said. "Three anchors. Three lives. All consumed. The dungeon collapsed."
Marina cut the ruined jerkin seam open. "He means the lich is permanently dead. Mike remains under review."
"Reasonable," Helena said.
Marina opened the last boss-cache Health draught over a bowl of living moss. The moss drank half. Mike drank the rest. Verdant Conduit carried its restoration toward depleted life reserve while flowing around the storm channels it could not safely rewrite. She cooled the tissue surrounding them and left the Chaos-bright paths untouched. By the time the moss faded, closed skin no longer lied about what remained: his flesh was whole, his reserves were climbing, and the deep channel ache still brightened whenever he called more than a spark.
"The body is repaired," Marina said. "The storm channels are not."
"So I can walk."
"You can sit while we preserve a dead city."
Mike opened the sealed material packet at Helena's table. Arin received the crown fragments, testing one edge with a thumbnail as the black iron caught green light. Ryan took the necromantic thread spool and throne-inlay strip inside a warded box. Marina claimed the banner ash, bone dust, and curse-scour salt; one drop of verdant mana separated ash from the black binding clinging to it, and exhaustion vanished from her face beneath sudden predatory interest.
"If this distinguishes imposed binding from the tissue carrying it," she said, "I can build a cleanser that removes a curse without stripping every beneficial enchantment around it."
"You sound happy," Vex observed.
"A dead lich left me a new medical problem and the reagent to insult it. I contain multitudes."
Mike placed the clay model, evacuation list, and copper message in Helena's care rather than treating them as salvage.
He told them about Ilyra. The public naming tubes. The seven riverworks. Thirty-two people who cracked their own bell so a king could never issue a perfect command. He described the three banners and repeated Aethran's warning exactly.
"You are not the first storm."
No one tried to solve it immediately.
Ryan was the first to speak. "Aethran recognized a category, or wanted you to believe he did. Those are different claims."
"The bell sabotage predates his lich body," Helena said. "Preserve every record before we infer anything."
Arin looked at the cracked crown fragments in her hands. "And until then?"
Mike felt the answer settle with surprising calm. "Until then, we grow past whoever came first."
The others carried the spoils away. Helena remained with the records.
"These names outlived the king who tried to own them," she said, touching the waxed sleeve. "We'll keep them together."
That promise settled the last thing Mike had carried out of the dungeon.
Over the next five days, Marina proved her first healing had been no illusion. The pale new tissue matured under her Restoration instead of tearing when Mike moved. His ribs stopped catching on deep breaths. The numbness never returned to his fingers. She could not erase the strain inside his storm channels, but each day the ache retreated farther from his sternum.
Arin repaired the Thunderstep Boot and the torn jerkin while Lumi guarded the forge bench as if Mike might escape through it. The Crownshard Bracers remained on his arms, untested beyond ordinary current. Their first real answer could wait until Marina was satisfied the hands inside them would survive it.
Beyond Basic Needs meant Mike never required ordinary sleep. It did not make rest useless. He spent the dark hours with Lumi curled against his leg, reading Ilyra's copper message while Stormbreak's hammers and voices continued beyond the shelter. For once, the world grew while he stayed still.
By the fifth day's end, Mike stood in the training yard under his own power. Health and Stamina were nearly full, Mana restored. Only a mild ache remained in the channels at rest.
Marina pressed two fingers to his wrist, sent a final green thread through the rebuilt flesh, and smiled. "Now you may choose something dangerous."
"Your confidence in me is moving."
"My confidence is in my repair. You remain under observation."
The next step existed because she had built it.
Mike returned to the private allocation waiting since the vault.
Two hundred and forty points were not treatment. They would decide what kind of body entered the next impossible place. The Ossuary had punished every narrow solution: strength without footing, speed without Stamina, power without control, survival without perception.
Perception took the largest share. Too many decisive threats in the Ossuary had hidden inside mechanisms, false priorities, and attacks whose first visible shape was already too late. Endurance followed because Grave Tax and the retreat had both proved that reaching the answer meant nothing if his body failed before he could use it. Agility, Vitality, and Arcane Power remained the central support for movement, survival, and violence. Strength and Arcane Control still grew, while Mana Capacity received only the margin he needed; Chaotic Conduit had changed the value of a larger Mana ceiling without making it worthless.
He entered the raw transaction.
[Attribute Allocation]
Available: 240
Strength: +21
Agility: +30
Endurance: +45
Vitality: +30
Perception: +56
Arcane Power: +29
Arcane Control: +22
Mana Capacity: +7
[Confirm?]
Mike confirmed.
[Allocation Complete]
Unspent Stat Points: 0
[Raw Attribute Totals]
Strength: 160
Agility: 160
Endurance: 100
Vitality: 160
Perception: 76
Arcane Power: 250
Arcane Control: 100
Mana Capacity: 70
The recalibration deepened every support at once. The room separated into cleaner distances and smaller motions. His stance steadied. Breath moved more easily through newly repaired ribs. Mana settled into wider, more disciplined channels without pretending those channels were healed.
A final private notice opened beneath the transaction.
[Level-35 Skill Selection Pending]
Options: Five compatible options generated.
Mike looked at the people around the table. "I have another choice to make."
Marina finished tying the clean wrap around his forearm. "Then read all five. You may test the winner once. I did not spend five days rebuilding you so you could turn one choice into five separate injuries."
Mike let the options remain sealed until they reached the yard.
The five sealed options waited behind the notice, each promising a different way to become harder for the world to stop.
