Chapter 107 - A Prophet (4)

Mike read the covenant twice.

The clauses did not promise safety, obedience from anyone else, or rescue when he made a mistake. They bound Loki to no delegated claim over Mike’s companions, allies, dependents, or territory. They recorded a singular Supreme investment and the backlash attached to his death or the covenant’s retraction. They left Mike’s will his own.

Dangerous terms. Honest enough to choose.

“I accept.”

The System sealed the decision inside his private interface. Loki did not glance toward the pane; he watched Mike instead.

“Then stand,” the Exalted said.

Mike already was.

Loki smiled and placed two fingers against Mike’s brow.

Cold passed through bone without pain. For an instant Mike felt every lightning path in his body at once: the channels made through survival, the scars left by bad grounding, the routes refined inside the Forge, and the deeper divergence that had never obeyed ordinary elemental law. Loki’s Chaos touched none of those paths as fuel. His authority provided the covenant; Mike’s own Chaos answered from within.

The two powers recognized one another without merging.

Thunder crossed the horizonless domain. Floating ruins turned their broken faces toward the sound. Lumi pressed against Mike’s calf, and the bond held his sense of self steady while an Exalted’s investment found a shape his mortal body could survive.

The private notice arrived with the weight of a verdict.

[Supreme Blessing Registered]

Chaos enters covenant without laying claim to the lives and land beside its Prophet.

Blessing of Chaos (Supreme)
Patron: Loki, Exalted of Chaos
Rank-F Flat Investment: +50 to all statistics
Resistance: 80% resistance to self-inflicted Chaos-channel backlash
Elemental Drift: Moderate reduction

[Title Acquired: Prophet of Chaos]
Effects:

[Title Acquired: First Prophet of an Exalted]
Effects:

[Prophet Ability Acquired: Broken Pattern]
Type: Passive
Effect: Detects major convergence toward irreversible defeat, binding, loss, or death.
Limits: Does not identify the best response or guarantee a favorable alternative.

Binding: Supreme covenant is singular.
Conditions: Patron backlash applies if the Prophet dies before transcending mortality or if the covenant is retracted.
Consequence: Undisclosed.

Mike read the pane once. The numbers changed what he could become; they did not restore what the Forge had already taken.

The physical change was clear without them.

The storm domain stopped crushing the air from his lungs. It remained immeasurably larger than him, but his body no longer mistook existence near Loki for a command to kneel. The burn beneath his bracers still hurt. The Mana spent in the Forge remained absent. The Blessing expanded capability and moderated one kind of backlash; it did not erase injuries or restore every resource.

Lightning crossed the domain, and Mike perceived structure inside it that had been invisible moments earlier. A branch passing behind a ruined tower split across seven charge-bearing paths. Six forks died against distance and resistance. The seventh struck an inverted river and sent current upstream through falling water.

Black-violet fire ran at the strike's heart. Chaos supplied the fuel in place of Mana; Loki's will gave the lightning its shape and target. The Blessing let Mike perceive the distinction for less than a heartbeat, leaving him with awe sharpened by caution.

Loki had lived inside that scale since the first integrated universe.

Mike’s Blessing did not grant equal understanding. It gave his mortal channels enough alignment to survive learning.

He closed one fist. The movement displaced more air than expected, and the black surface beneath his boot answered with a thin ring of charge. The flat attributes were already present. The two title multipliers altered how the whole structure expressed them. Mike refused the urge to test a punch inside an Exalted’s domain.

“Restraint within thirty seconds,” Loki said. “A promising start.”

“I have a practice field.”

“You have people who will stop you before the practice field becomes a crater. More valuable.”

Broken Pattern arrived more quietly.

Mike had expected another form of danger sense. Instead, the new passive sat beyond ordinary perception, silent while nothing around him converged toward irreversible loss. Loki’s presence could kill him. The possibility alone did not trigger it. A warning would require events actually narrowing toward that end.

“Good,” Loki said.

“You can’t see the pane.”

“Still no.”

Mike read the stable blessing and title effects once more. “The System matched what you promised.”

“Its lawyers will be devastated by the compliment.”

“What changes between us now?”

“You may reach for the covenant line. I may answer, refuse, or decide the answer would make you smaller.” Loki stepped back. “A Supreme covenant is singular, and enough gods will recognize your Prophet mark to make secrecy temporary. Most cannot cross a sealed Tutorial, so do not waste tomorrow preparing for an army that cannot arrive.”

The warning carried its own direction: grow, make Stormbreak capable without him, and learn which divine attention became action. Loki offered leverage, not shelter from the consequences of accepting it.

“You still have no faction?” Mike asked.

“None.”

“Then I am your entire political structure.”

“You are one covenant, Michael. Do not become administrative before you become divine.”

Mike almost smiled. “Helena would improve that.”

“She usually does.”

The storm folded around Mike and Lumi. Black stone became wet earth beneath his boots. Hammer blows resumed beyond the thornwood. A suspended raindrop struck Mike’s cheek, and the gate guard completed a blink that had begun before the audience.

Almost no Tutorial time had passed.

Lumi shook rain from her coat, then inspected each tail as if divine transfer had been a weather inconvenience. Mike crouched beside her.

“Still you?”

She pressed her forehead into his shoulder and sent a bright, irritated pulse through the bond.

“Good.”

His private allocation reminder remained beside the new titles.

[Unspent Attribute Points: 120]

The points had come from levels twenty-nine and thirty. The Blessing changed their strategic value. Vitality now supported survival and the Health resource Chaotic Conduit charged directly. Arcane Power amplified the skills that Chaos fueled after each payment. Mike did not need a complete sheet to make the choice.

[Attribute Allocation — Private]
Vitality: +40
Arcane Power: +80
Total Spent: 120
Unspent Attribute Points: 0

The raw allocation settled beneath the Blessing’s flat and multiplicative effects. His existing burns remained. His depleted Mana did not refill. The stronger body simply had more room to recover into.

Mike returned through the side gate and went first to the people who would pay if he misunderstood what had happened.

Arin and Ryan were testing the Forge insulator beneath a rain shelter. Marina had turned one corner of the work yard into a controlled alchemy space. Vex sat on an overturned crate with a precision tool balanced across each palm, complaining that shared ownership devalued artistry.

Marina saw Mike and stopped mixing.

Her gaze moved from his face to his balance, then to Lumi. “You were gone for less than a breath.”

“Longer from my side.”

Arin set down the Ridgeforged Bulwark’s new strap. “Threat?”

“Offer. Accepted.”

The work shelter did not become silent; rain, distant hammers, and the forge continued. His team did.

Mike kept the disclosure in the right order.

“The Administrator gave me his name. Loki. He is an Exalted of Chaos, one of nine. He is the only other being who can originate and wield true Chaos. Mine is still mine. The covenant cannot claim any of you or Stormbreak.”

Ryan’s hands lowered from the insulator. “Supreme?”

“Yes.”

Marina’s expression tightened. “What does it cost?”

“Visibility. Permanence unless one of us pays dearly to break it. Loki suffers severe backlash if I die before transcending mortality or if he retracts the covenant.” Mike held her gaze. “And the Blessing makes it easier to forget that Health spent through Chaotic Conduit is still gone. It reduces channel backlash. It does not refund blood.”

“Show us what matters,” Arin said.

Mike deliberately projected the Blessing, both titles, Broken Pattern’s exact threshold, the no-claim clause, and his Vitality/Arcane Power allocation. They read without pretending the numbers were small.

Vex pointed at First Prophet of an Exalted. “He has never done this before.”

“Correct.”

“Comforting.”

Arin ignored him. “Can Loki command you?”

“No. Power and consequence are bound. My will is not. He cannot inspect my panes, speak through me, or use the covenant to claim anyone here.”

Her shoulders did not relax, but her fear acquired edges. That was enough to work with.

Ryan studied the flat gain and title multipliers. “We do not know the whole stacking order.”

“Then we test the action, not an invented total,” Mike said.

Marina was already reaching for her diagnostic kit. “One Skyhammer. If you spend eight Health, I expect eight Health gone. What I want to see is how much damage the channel escapes.”

Mike closed the projection. He did not ask them to trust Loki because he had accepted. “Same quarry hollow as before.”

The basalt target stood alone at the center of Ryan’s grounding ring.

Ryan had given the charge somewhere harmless to go. Arin raised the Ridgeforged Bulwark between the basin and the others; Lumi remained behind it, disliked the arrangement, and complied. Marina held two fingers to Mike’s wrist until his pulse answered evenly. Vex returned from the quarry rim with a wet leaf stuck to his hood. “Nobody here but the people already making poor choices.”

Mike’s private resource pane showed the Forge debt and recent tests still mattered. He selected the center of the basalt block, two hundred and twelve meters away.

Skyhammer belonged to the target point, not to his hand.

He engaged Chaotic Conduit.

Eight Health paid for the familiar eighty Mana-equivalent activation. Mana remained unchanged. The new title increased the Chaos-fueled skill’s effectiveness, while Prophet of Chaos sharpened his Arcane Control during the channel.

Charge gathered above the chosen point.

The Blessing did not remove variance. Mike felt cold, heat, and an impact broad enough to waste itself across the quarry floor all straining to express through the same valid strike. Moderate drift reduction quieted them. The skill kept the basalt as its target while Mike’s heightened control rejected the wider impact.

Mike released.

Skyhammer fell from above.

White-blue lightning struck the center of the basalt and drove a narrow column of force through it. The block did not vanish. It split into six radial pieces, each thrown against the quarry floor inside the prepared basin. A pale frost rim formed around the exact point of impact and stopped there.

Thunder reached Stormbreak a heartbeat later.

The crater’s center glowed white through the rain. Each basalt section carried an identical branching scar, as though one impossible fracture had been copied through the whole target. The earlier Chaos-fueled, Health-paid Skyhammer had combined inward force with uncontrolled frost. This strike kept the useful compression, magnified it, and let the drift resolve within the selected target rim, no wider than Mike’s hand.

Power had increased. More importantly, Mike could feel the possible drift expressions clearly enough to reject the ones he did not want without changing the skill’s target.

Five chain paths searched for hostiles. They found none. The skill terminated them rather than choosing trees, allies, or harmless wildlife as substitutes.

Ryan’s ground ring carried the remaining charge into all six stakes. Arin’s Bulwark caught a fan of stone chips. No fragment crossed the observation cut.

Mike ended the channel and checked his body before the pane.

The sternum pull remained, but it was muted. His right hand answered immediately. His heartbeat stayed even. The Health payment was still gone; backlash resistance had reduced the injury produced by carrying the activation, not refunded the price.

[Controlled Test Result — Private]
Skill: Skyhammer Bolt
Funding: Chaos-fueled / Health paid
Target Point: Retained
Health Consumed: 8
Mana Consumed: 0
Elemental Drift: minor, localized to declared target zone
Channel Backlash: greatly reduced

Marina examined him before looking at the crater. “No neurological lag. Channel heat is present but falling.”

Then she looked at what the bolt had done, and satisfaction broke through her clinical focus. “That was stronger and cleaner.”

“Worth accepting?” Vex asked.

“Worth learning to use,” she said. “Those are different claims.”

Mike preferred hers.

They returned with Loki’s name still held inside the core group. Helena heard the result and made the only rule the covenant required of Stormbreak. “Any patron offer remains voluntary. Anyone who wants help judging one may ask without owing us the answer.”

Before she could send it, a Tutorial-wide chime passed through the ridge.

[Core Dungeon Status Update]
Second Core Dungeon: unsealed
Entrance: undiscovered
First Full Clear: rules apply
Tutorial Closure: 6 Days, 10 Hours, 08 Minutes

The clock turned divine scale back into a mortal problem. Six days was long enough to scout badly and lose people before anyone found the entrance. It was short enough that waiting for perfect information would surrender the First Clear to whatever else was moving through the region.

Helena turned toward Rook and Dane. “Creek bend. Find the entrance and return. You do not enter.”

The scouts accepted and moved into the rain.

Mike could have searched faster. With burned channels, depleted resources, and no entrance to strike toward, speed would only leave one fewer rested fighter when somebody found it. He watched the scouts disappear into the rain with Lumi beside him and the Supreme covenant quiet beneath his storm.

This time, the door was looking for him too.
